Planting any crops comes with working out the best specific time for it's planting and harvest to ensure maximum output at harvest.
Take a look at this section of our rice farm below
It is getting ripe already, fully matured in this month of October.
Now here is another section of the rice from a neighboring field here too
Remember that the month of October is coming to an end and the rains are begining to cease gradually.
The second rice field has not even started hulle production, the rice case that will house the grains, this means that it might not meet up with the timing to produce well before the rains finally ceases.
We often have the highest peak of rainfall in the month or September and early October, at this time every rice plant in the field is expected to be pregnant (showing signs of carrying hulles) if it is not at this time, the plants might not produce well.
The atmospheric moisture from harmattan dews helps rice often times to get to full maturity with matured grains b when the rain ceases and there is no dew, it means that there will be no harvest .
Planting rice at the right ensure maximum productivity. Rice can be planted based on geographic location and weather. The best periods for this location so far has been from the month of May to be harvested in September and October .
Planting the above rice a bit late has caused this delay in productivity, now we have to hope and watch for more rain until the end of October if this rice above will produce any grain at all.
Disadvantage of planting rice early is a simple one, it means that the rice will produce very much early and harvest will be in the swamp. The ground will still be water soaked when the rice will be ready for harvest. It is usually not comfortable since rice harvest involves that we spread sacks on the ground and beat the grains unto it.
You can't spread sacks on a ground filled with water 💦 to harvest dry grains on them.
While seeking to know the best time to plant rice, knowing the different species to plant at such timings is also important. For a late producing rice like the long grain 🌾 ones that spend 5months for a maturity cycle it can be planted early enough in the month of May while the short grain rice that used 3-4months for maturity cycle (life cycle) one can consider planting it in the month of June and July.
This way the perfect timing for maximum rice grain production is ensured.
I hope that you have learnt some secrets about planting rice at the best timing and weather conditions.
