Savoring Native Fish: A Feast of Shing Stinging Catfish and Small Shrimp.

Image

I had a wonderful time at the market today. Whenever I visit, my eyes are always on the lookout for fresh, native fish. Amidst the wide variety available, I spotted Shing fish and small shrimp. I could tell at a glance that they were incredibly fresh. We Bengalis have a special fondness for native fishespecially Shing and shrimp. Both their flavor and nutritional value are truly unmatched.

Let’s start with the Shing fish. It is highly nutritious and extremely beneficial for health. Finding fresh Shing fish in the market is often a stroke of luck. Seeing these lively, glistening fish today, I didn't hesitate to buy them. A stew made with this fish tastes exquisite; it can be prepared either as a light broth or a thick, spicy bhuna curry. Since Shingfish has very few bones, it is easy for children to eat, and consuming it provides a significant energy boost.

Next, I bought small shrimp. These tiny shrimp have a dedicated fan base of their own. They can be used to create a variety of delicious dishes. Stir-frying them with bitter gourd or other vegetables makes for a fantastic meal when paired with dal and rice. Shrimp fritters bora or a spicy mash/stew chachchari are also incredibly tasty. These small shrimp cook quickly, and their aroma alone is enough to whet the appetite. We often make a bhorta mashed dish with them, which tastes divine with steaming hot rice. The natural flavor is a hallmark of native fish.

Amidst the abundance of hybrid or farmed fish, the taste of native river fish remains unique. The Shing and shrimp I bought today will make for a wonderful dinner. These flavors evoke memories of our rich culinary heritage. There is a special joy in sharing these delicious fish dishes with the whole family. Including such fresh, native fish in one's diet from time to time is not only good for health but also immensely satisfying.
