One thing I am ever grateful for in my country is the fact that we do not always experience natural disasters in the country. It is not as though we do not experience it at all, but when compared to other countries, we are in a much better position. Natural disasters like earthquakes and Tsunami are not really common here, but that does not also mean that we are totally free from experiencing them. We are currently in the rainy season and places like Lekki Lagos Nigeria are not very safe. It’s an Island and thus very prone to flooding. I am already reading news of flood occurrences that are ravaging that area and from the look of things, it’s not good.

But then again, I have only experienced this flooding first hand once in my life and that is because I do not live near the Islands. It’s easy to walk around during the rainy season outside of the Island and that is one major reason I would not stay there. The time I experienced flooding firsthand it lasted 5 months, and a lot of people thought it was the end of the world because of how it raved the entire country. I saw buildings collapse because the water had soaked into the foundations. When it was over, our roads were never the same, so much so that some of those roads are yet to be fixed.
I would not wish for such to repeat itself again, and even right now I sympathize with those I see taking the blow of this current flood. But then again, I am disheartened that with the high flood risk in the island, the drainages are still covered in dirt. Here we do not take care of our drainages and when the water flows and can not flow through the drainage, it enters houses, schools, churches, mosques, and anything close to it. It’s just sad that we never learn our lesson.

It's truly sad how we keep facing the same issue every year without fixing the root problem. Poor drainage maintenance in flood-prone areas like Lekki makes things worse. Your post is timely and important.

Flooding is really a very big disaster that destroys both Lives and property but though over here we are bless we don't always experience that.
Nigeria is blessed there no doubt about that but just some little little flooding here and there.. nothing more
Those floods take alot from people, it's something we don't like to ever repeat itself

The issue of poor drainage systems in this country of ours is causing this... it's disheartening to see how people suffer both loss of life and properties. Our leaders should do better in prioritizing the citizens life and do what's needed.
