I can remember how I felt the very first time I heard about AI. It was thrilling to think about. The things I have done with it are things I never imagined doing before now. For example when I was doing my project defense for my first degree in 2018 I struggled so much with Google, I had to look through journals and articles to write my project. At one point I gave up because I was frustrated with navigating Google and reading a 20,000 word article just to come up with a few paragraphs. I ended up taking the theory to the cyber cafe after struggling to finish chapter two. I was told to come back in a week and when I did they weren't finished so I had to come back the week after. After all the back and forth my supervisor ended up rejecting it and I had to do the process all over again.
Now I also remember how my project defense in 2022 went. I just gave chat GPT the topic and instructed it on everything my lecturer told me to do. I finished the whole project in two days because I was lazy. I had enough time to focus on my construction all thanks to the invention of chat GPT. AI has really changed how the world works and how people reason. Some months ago I was questioned by my theater superiors on why I was not writing enough scripts. My excuse was time and they immediately countered that excuse with chat GPT. No matter how we look at it, AI is here to stay, and it will only advance as time goes on.
AI isn't all good and it isn't all bad either. AI was invented to help make life easier, it was created to give man time to focus energy and resources into other things. This is why we can't blame AI for being lazy, we can't blame AI for people losing their jobs because they didn't learn to use AI. If AI was meant to help us and not replace us, doesn't that mean we need to do even more work to learn about its use so we can utilize it efficiently? But instead the majority just sit down, relax and then complain…

AI has arguably transformed toil into opportunity. But for another section, it might be otherwise. AI’s ability to streamline tasks, like writing scripts or completing projects, frees us to pursue our passions. So an unexamined reliance on AI risks dulling our intellectual vigor.
AI is a paradox. While AI’s evolution is unstoppable, its impact hinges on our choices. Whether it will dull human creativity and enable humans to pursue elevated human creativity, only time will tell, it's up to humans to not let it foster complacency
The truth is that artificial intelligence has made a lot of students very lazy and I am one of those students.
Wow, your comparison between 2018 and 2022 project defense really shows how much AI has changed things in such a short time. That part hit home. It's so true -AI isn't the problem, it's our response to it. I love how you framed it: it was created to help us, not replace us. Your reflection about how we need to do the work to adapt instead of just complaining really stuck with me. This was such an inspiring and honest post. Thanks for sharing
I'm happy you could relate to it, thanks for stopping by.
