Digital Genie: Blessing Or Digital Doom

I got to know about Chat GPT and other AI in 2022. Interestingly, I recently found out that AI has a rich history before 2022 and that it started in the 1950s. However, AI gained global popularity in 2022. I remember how a friend told me about Chat GPT on the Neoxian City Discord server. I was struggling with an assignment . After going through three rounds of tug of war with the assignment, I decided to take a break and rant to my friends about how difficult the assignment was. I don’t remember who exactly told me (probably Olujay or B0s). But I remember that the person sent me a Chat GPT link. I clicked on it, asked the necessary questions and I was surprised by the answers I got! There’s no doubt that AI has helped humanity in different aspects, particularly the digital aspect. Not only has it made tasks done quickly, it has also made tasks more efficient.

Taking a closer look at AI today, it is like a double edged sword. On one hand are the positive effects, on the hand are the negative effects. Having established the fact that Ai has helped transform human life from the way it was to a better stage. The fact that AI poses a threat to humanity cannot be overlooked. For this week’s Sci Fi multiverse prompt, the community asks us about the purpose of creating AI. Do you think AI is making possible or negative impacts in the digital world? If you have your way, will you put a stop to AI?

In my opinion, one of the purpose of creating AI is to help humans in different ways by performing certain tasks, for example, solving complex questions. Assignments, tests, presentations became easier because I had access to AI. In my school, some lecturers do not take their jobs seriously. They don’t come for classes, but they drop materials, expecting students to read on their own and pass exams. Sometimes, these materials are too complex. Thanks to AI, all I have to do is copy and paste it there and ask it to simplify them. One of the ways I have benefitted from AI is that it helps me simplify my notes for better understanding. AI has also helped automate repetitive tasks. A few weeks ago, I needed to divide my poems into categories. Instead of going online, searching for the poems one after the other, then compiling them into a table, I just sent it to Ai who helped me complete the task in no time.

Yes, AI is making a positive impact in the digital world, but as I mentioned earlier, AI is a double-edged sword. Just as it has advantages, it also has disadvantages. Slowly, AI is becoming increasingly dangerous. One of the ways AI poses a threat to human existence is through deep fake videos. Today, it's difficult to tell which video is real and which is not. Recently, I came across a video about Cristiano Ronaldo. I know the things he has said in interviews. I know the things he would say. I've been a fan of his all my life, so I know him too well. In that video, Ronaldo insulted his rival, Lionel Messi. He also insulted other footballers and managers. I knew the video wasn’t real; I knew it was fake because Ronaldo would never say those things.

However, I was surprised when I checked the comment section and saw that some people actually believed it and were angry about it. The video seemed so real that it would be easy for a person who isn’t a Ronaldo fan to believe it. Presently, there is a war going on between Israel and Iran. People have seen this as an opportunity to deceive others. I’ve seen many AI-generated bombing videos of events that didn’t happen, but people would claim they happened, just to generate likes.

If I had my way, I wouldn’t put a stop to AI. Humans just need to find a way to strike a balance so as to enjoy its full potential.
