Do Good Unto Others

Our value system goes a long way in determining how we do things. They guide our decisions and actions. They also inform our expectations from others and advise to others. Sometimes, it is obvious to an observer and difficult for us to disguise even.

Personally, I have a goon number of values that direct my actions but one which stands out the most is "doing unto others what I would like to be done to me".

I have come to realise that one of the ways to sleep with a good conscience everyday is knowing that you did not offend someone and even if you did, knowing that you did not just go out of your way to make trouble may be enough because oftentimes conflicts are a normal occurrence in life.

In my dealings with people, I ensure that I only do things that I wouldn't mind if I was at the receiving end.
This principle also means that sometimes, even when it is not convenient, I occasionally go out of my way to assist people and help them overcome difficulties. Not only when it is easy.

This principle is something I believe that more people need to adopt too. A lot of evil that occurs in the society is down to people doing things to others that they will not like to be at the receiving end.
For example, people who steal know that they will not like to be stolen from. People who lie don't like when they are lied to and so and so forth.

So if everyone can do unto others what they themselves will like, then we will gradually have a world that is peaceful because people will consider every action and stay away from evil.
