Healthy and Unhealthy Sides of Desire

As humans, we're beings with one desire or another in our minds, for the sake of the things we want to achieve or the things we want to do or we want to be. Whatever that thing we aspire to, it builds a desire in us. These desires coming from our aspirations stem from reasons like dreams, curiosities, imaginations, experience and more. Such things, whatever they may be in our individual cases leave us wanting something, through which only can that desire be satisfied or achieved.

However, the problem is that not every desire should probably be a desire. It leads to what could be considered healthy and unhealthy desires. As the name suggests, I don't think the idea about these should be far-fetched. That one is said to be healthy and the other is unhealthy says a lot that desires need to be checked so that we don't end up harming ourselves with what was supposed to be an aspiration for something good.

A healthy desire wants you to be better in all ramifications. A desire that's about you getting better, improved and taking on new things. It should be that which brings you true joy and fulfilment, not a false one, and also does the same to others while possibly impacting them as well. Such a desire should be one that when you look at yourself in the past and in the present, you become grateful, irrespective of how backward one may seem when compared to others. This and more constitute a healthy desire. Wanting the best with no comparison.

On the other hand, an unhealthy desire appeals to momentary emotion and comparison but never true satisfaction. As it says unhealthy, it affects or harms a person. This harm could be physical, mental, psychological, emotional and so on. Unsatisfaction comes with such a desire in the sense that you're never okay because you're measuring up to another person's success rather than yourself. When it becomes about a competition and just emotional satisfaction with no concern for effects, then it becomes unhealthy.

This calls upon us as humans to be careful about our desires. While it's good to have desires, which of course we all do and we should, not everyone is good. I think we should be mindful of some of our life choices and the things or people we listen to or watch. Many of them build up an unhealthy desire; a desire that shouldn't be, or for things that we shouldn't.
