My culture, My identity

(edited)

Culture is the total way of life of a group of people, which helps to identify people and their tribes because everyone has their own culture.

There are three main tribes in Nigeria. We have the Yoruba, Igbo, and Hausa, and the easiest way to identify people from these tribes is through their language and mode of dressing. Each tribe has its unique language, and when they speak it, one can easily tell which tribe they are from.

Recently, I have been a fan of native wear, but it always escaped my mind to take pictures. Fortunately, my partner, who loves taking pictures, took this of me while I was trying to round up my work for an outing.

Our culture defines our dressing, people can easily tell my tribe based on my mode of dressing above, some people often think I am from the Igbo tribe, I guess cos of my look and nowadays it is even difficult for them to figure out the truth when most time I converse with english language, so only few that we end up getting close that later get to know my tribe.

Each tribe has its own culture regarding marriage. The Hausa marriage is the cheapest, while the Yoruba follows, and the Igbo is the most expensive because you have to pay the parents, siblings, uncle, and other extended family if you want to marry their daughter... I have seen many people complain about how expensive their marriage cost and the reason why some people don't want to marry from their tribe.

My tribe has a different masquerade festival, and the way they are done is different; there are some masquerades that, when they want to come out, all females must be indoors because it is an abomination for the females to see them.

When it comes to greetings, I will give it to my tribe[Yoruba]. We are so respectful, the boys were taught to prostrate when greeting the elders, while the girls kneel down on both knees. Even though western life has made many stop doing this unless on special occasions and special people like parents and in-laws, but still, we love to greet.

My partner once asked me if there is any culture we practice she needs to know about but I told her there is nothing to worry about because I am not deeply rooted in culture and even if there is any, it doesn't mean I would practice it especially if it doesn't go well with me, I have heard about some culture that the wife needs to eat a cooked lizard after givig birth, some they have to dip the child inside a body of water to know if he is a bastard or not, I do not support this kind of culture because there are better ways to know a bastard child and DNA is the way, why go through the risk of drowning the innocent child and the part of eating lizard, yuck!

I dont think dipping children inside water or eating lizards after giving birth is a culture I think it's a tradition, one that every family in Africa has but some have been abolished thanks to religion, I don't support most traditions either I think as Africans we can do better, good content.

Well, tradition is also part of culture that has been passed down from generation to generation..

Recently, a king also spoke ill against the masquerade that females are not allowed to look; he said they ought to do it in the jungle if they are against a particular gender seeing them.

That's quite daring, I think the purpose of parading the masquerade is to look for someone they can sacrifice for their masquerade whatever, and that's pretty fucked up, especially in this age and stage.

I'm just smiling seeing how you will pay all the family members before you marry their daughter... In Nigeria the tribes have their culture and this culture or tradition is there way of life... Honestly, I had no idea that you are from Yoruba... That's great though...

For me, it's the type of hat (and dressing in general) people wear that I try to discern one tribe from another. Before reading this, I remember hearing somewhere that there are only two main tribes lol, Hausa and Igbo. Thanks for the insights :)

That must be a tribalist. for him to cancel the Yoruba tribe lol

Sometimes I tend to wonder why the Igbos make it so difficult to marry their daughters, they put the man through a lot.

0E-8 BEE

it is their tradition and their ladies are proud of it. There was an Igbo lady I know who told me her bride price is 5m, cos she is a beautiful girl, so her own needs to be higher lol

0E-8 BEE

After paying that amount you'd still bring items oo, more like they want to wreck a man in the name of marriage.

Hehe. I haven't seen you wearing such kind of clothes. Buy the was you looks good. In case of culture, I think people are not bound it like earlier days as we have technology and we can communicate with other culture easily. mixing culture is very natural in the present time.
