[Movie] Salaar _ Bolloywood Movie Review
It wasn't like I just saw Salaar, I just remembered it when I dropped my previous review, this movie was different from all the action films I saw these past couple of months, and I say this with all seriousness, that South Indian cinema is all or nothing and Salaar is a prime example of that.
The film is set in this fictional city state, Khansaar, which exemplifies a dystopian future and remains essentially a monarchy, and this gave the film a larger than life appeal before the first scene , It is about the friendship between two men, Deva, now the exiled prince of Khansaar and Varadha, who is the current prince of Khansaar, then, his own father's ministers and relatives make a plan to overthrow Varadha and he sends for DevA to help assist him to sustain his rule and become the sole king of Khansaar.
I loved the friendship of Deva and Varadha the most. They were the emotional backbone of the entire movie and it had a bit of the same energy and world building of Baahubali, just in a different manner... I think it was fitting that they had the same kind of themes because that's how they were brought together. Prabhas' Deva was a quiet intensity and he did not need to say much as his presence itself was enough to be felt in all the scenes.
However, it is the action sequences which really make this film shine, I mean, full mass action, where each of the hit you feel, each fight gets worse from the previous one, There is one fight scene in particular that just kept building and building until I was sitting up straight just remembering it, no exaggeration, the raw, brutal and larger than life action style of Prashanth Neel is the style this movie has in KGF is the style you will love here.
But I must be fair, and admit that the political maneuvering, the intrigues, the betrayal and the struggle for power in Khansaar did get a little thick at a point, there was quite a few times I had to take a moment to figure out who was on top of who, who was really on my side and who was not, as there were quite a lot of characters involved in the power play. It's not a movie that you can watch half the way through while checking your phone or something, it requires total concentration to follow if you have to.
The world building, though, I have to give major credit for that. Khansaar felt like its own universe, with its own rules, hierarchy, and danger lurking in every corner, It reminded me of watching a war unfold in a place that somehow feels both ancient and brutal at the same time.
Shruti Haasan's role was interesting too, but I felt like she was underutilised, as she has been proven to be a very talented actress, however, she managed to stand strong in the few moments she had, At the end, the movie definitely left its story open, placing an obvious setting for part two, but for me, that was a good thing, because I didn't feel like it dragged on unnecessarily.
Would I recommend Salaar? Yes, particularly if you enjoy action, loyalty based tales and world building on a grand scale, Just come in with the intent of concentrating, as there is plenty of politics going on but, in the action department, it is worth it.
