[TV] My Review on "To Kill a Monkey"

Yesterday afternoon, I was scrolling through when IG page when I saw the highlight of To Kill a Monkey Not a new show to me though because I saw it not long ago and right before I watched it, Bucci Franklin's face in the thriller said everything I needed to know because he doesn't act any casual movie. I watched it, saw everything and I was right to truth it.

William Benson who played the main actor was Efe in this movie. A Lagos programmer and also a waiter at one restaurant drowning in debt, how to take care of his family and new kids ran into an old pal he helped sometimes ago, Oboz who is now a rich man running a hidden cybercrime operation. Efe declined his offer at first. But he kept needing money. And you already can tell how that ended. I like how the movie director, Kemi Adetiba does her movies with much patience, no rushing or padding depending on the episode.

Running alongside Efe is Bimbo Akintola who acted as inspector Mo. A grieving police officer who was trying her best to come up with a case against Oboz and his operation even though she wasn't giving the go ahead. She acted on her self will. While watching, I didn't get the connection for the two halves of the show but I later got the connection, and to be honest, I like that gap I experienced at first.

Efe who I'll call the earth of the movie acted on the slow erosion of a decent man, right from his physical choices he made, what he faced and the delays he gave to answer some questions asked by his wife rather that giving a full speech. And on the other hand, the person who made the loudest noise in the show, Oboz is the reason while the show received much recognition. Because from what I watched, his charismatic put is soul into the movie from how he looks fun to be around with, to how terrifying he can become and how calm he can also be around Efe.

Nosa, who acted as Efe's wife, Stella Damascus, didn't really show her true colour when they didn't have at all, but once the crack in their marriage showed, her true colour came out. Idia, Oboz's wife also made an impression though all she knew was money she was getting. The movie really came up with some deep cast, and Kemi uses almost all of it.

After watching King of Boys directed by Kemi, which I feel sge probably made her name with that, I already felt the same appetit for this show too. The dialogue that is not afraid to be blunt and direct about shame and money, the high stakes, and every tense moment of this show even when the score leans hard.

If I have any actual complaints about this movie, it will be the pacing in-between. Because all the eight episodes needs a very slow build not the fast build they gave it like a rush. Though towards the end, there was a bit of pacing. I'll like you to watch this movie for yourself, so I won't disclose what happened to Efe and Nosa marriage after they became rich, and I won't say what happened to Oboz during the whole second half of the show, because that is where the real movie started. It's worth it if you watch on your own.

The first two episodes are just like a preamble into what the whole show is all about, just to prepare you for what you are about to watch, the cursing, rituals, crime, investigation, loyalty, family conflict, betrayal and all. You will enjoy it, trust me.
