Funny enough, a friend of mine posted something in this regard yesterday or so. To paraphrase, he said “When you are going after a goal, don't listen to the people closest to you. Listen to the people closest to your goals.” It's kind of ironic or improper because we're supposed to listen to those closest to us right? Or maybe that's what the system taught us.
Concerning your point on public opinion, it's high time many of us stopped listening to that. Yes, some opinions could be helpful and we need to hear them, but how many are there in the pool of noise and unsolicited, unwanted public opinions? So, when are you planning to go back and do that medical course? Let me know so that I too can follow you and chase that dream too.😁😀
That's a powerful statement. I totally agree with the message it passes. Thankfully, I no longer pay attention to everyone who thinks they can have a say in my life's decisions, enough to make me put everything to a halt. They will be fine.

That's a very motivating statement, lately I have come to accept the fact that I have to follow those who believe in me and not those who stay close but don't believe in me and this is similar to your friends quote.
Some public opinion might be worth listening to, but some needs to be trashed too , just learn to filter informations.

For a fact, your friend is right because the closest people to you might not be sharing same goals as you so they can't reason with you in same direction to achieve that goal
