THE PRESSURE OF SCHOOLING IN NIGERIA

Schooling in Nigeria is hard, especially the tertiary institutions. It’s so bad that a lot of Nigerians think it is like this all over the world, but in truth, the educational system in other parts of the world is way better than what we have. I am not even talking about the curriculum that is outdated, I am talking about the system and process from admission to graduation. The system is wack for the average Nigerian and with all the stress we still have to deal with an outdated curriculum. This is why students outside the country tend to do very well, because of the harsh conditions we have to endure because our government has failed us.

I remember a friend of mine back in the days who gained admission to a school outside the country the same time I finished, by the time I was done, she had graduated, went for her service and even finished law school here in Nigeria, and went back for her masters and finished before I finally graduated. Anytime she called it was as though she was almost always free, she did not do more than 5 courses in a semester, whereas, the least courses I did throughout my school year was 8 which was in the second semester of my final year. Know that with all these courses comes textbooks and practicals that needed to be paid for but were usually never done.

Thinking about all these alone, plus the fact that I was my own sponsor. I know there are people like me all over the world, but then, there are no jobs here to support students trying to fend for themselves, lecture hours can stretch from morning till night. Because students must come to class when it is convenient for the lecturers and sometimes the lecturers might not even come to class because of whatever reason. You might not even see some from the beginning to the end of a semester but must buy their textbooks and write their exams. This is just how hard it is to school here. And the worst of it all is that a lecturer can fail an entire class because they feel like demigods.

Very true... Tuition textbooks for students should be subsidized so we can enjoy education a bit
