AN HUNGER TO REMEMBER

I am someone who has experienced hunger a number of times, especially during my school days. There were times I ate once in three days because that was how I could afford food. Those were the times in my life when I was in school and there was nothing coming from home. I never had the luxury of carrying foodstuffs or provisions to school. First it was because when my parents had the money I never really liked loads so I just took the cash instead. Then the reason changed to my parents not being able to afford it.

That was the period I had to live off the scraps I got, some from friends or from church. This was not because I begged any, but from coincidentally bumping into a friend when they were eating or going to church and discovering there was a program and the church decided to provide food. There was a time when these were the only two scenarios where I was able to eat, especially before I discovered hive. It became a little easier after I discovered hive as I was able to eat from the little I earned.

One I remember very well was when I had not eaten for over two days. It was the third day and I needed to go to church. My church was really far then, the transportation to and fro was about six hundred naira, but I could not afford it. So I decided to trek. I started trekking early, calculating the time for service. I knew there was a program that day and was hoping they would share food. They did, but unfortunately the food did not reach me. I only got a drink, and when I took it, I felt every bit of it in my system. Trekking back on an empty stomach was the only thing I could do, and upon getting home, I saw my neighbor standing by my door with a plate, she was just about to leave when I saw her. To date, she did not know how much she saved a life that day.
