Title: Money and Students: How Are You Really Surviving School?
As students and alumni that we are, I know we all had that "I'm prepared" thinking before we resumed school. Most of us had our bills calculated, talking of school fees, pocket money, transport, and all, and after calculating it all, we feel we have enough to last us.
But along the line, even before half of the semester, we are already broke, and we begin to think again while checking our bank transaction history.
That's the time you get to school and start seeing all those unexpected departmental dues and new compulsory handouts, and everything starts to show up as if you didn't plan or think before coming to school.
The truth remains that it's not easy to be a student. We have those who depend solely on their parents or siblings, we have those who are into one thing or the other and we have those who lean on both, while we as well have those who are sponsoring themselves or are being sponsored by some organizations.
So, as a student, we would like to know how you're surviving school financially, and as alumni, how were you able to navigate through?
So, in this prompt, we would like to know if... school went the way you planned, did you run any side hustle, or did you depend on someone? Tell us the hardest money-related challenge you faced in school. Have you ever been completely broke, and what did that experience teach you?
Well, I had this particular semester in school; it was one I never knew I would go broke in, because I had my plans well drafted out. I had bought enough food to even last me. A month after resumption, I was so broke to the extent that I was already trying loan apps to borrow from. It wasn't an easy period for me; my course is one that requires a lot of practicals, and I never knew we would be doing so many practicals that semester and even traveling to do some of it. That particular semester is one I can never forget; it stretched me and even forced me to be a painter, a handwork I never learned but find myself doing. That was when I learned that calculating and budgeting on paper is different from doing the same in real life.
Everyone has a story, a survival story. So, we ask that you be sincere with us. Even if it is funny or somehow embarrassing, do well to tell us; we listen, we don't judge.
