A Bond Beyond Academics

(edited)

This week's prompt for the Hive Student Connect Community is to share about the friends we met in school, and how we met them. I find this topic interesting and I would love to share how I met my very good friend some years ago.

No man is an island they say and the more I think about it the more this words makes so much sense to me. No matter how much we enjoy our own company, once in a while we crave human presence and that, in itself, is a wonderful thing.

I am an introvert by nature, and I have a very small circle, smaller than I’d admit.

Making friends can be difficult for me sometimes but maintaining them is even worse.

I met my friend Benson in my final year in 300 level in school, at that time Benson was in his final year. At first, he was more of a mentor and senior colleague to me before he became my friend. Benson is the most selfless person that I have ever met and most times I wonder if he is human at all.

Unlike the usual friendship pattern that I have adopted, it didn't work with Benson. He wasn't one to give up on a good friendship and to date I respect and admire him for that.

Benson was that friend I never knew I needed until he showed up in my life and I saw the role he played in my life and studies.

Benson and I met when I was doing my Industrial Training (IT), he was the one person who helped me ace my IT defense. We met in the Lab where he was preparing for his final year project. I wasn't one to talk for long with strangers but Benson made me forget my MO as weird as it was, it was nice.

Benson didn't only become my friend he also became my brother and my sister's big brother too. For siblings like mine who were very picky and reserved, Benson truly did a number on them.

I and Benson’s friendship has grown over the years and is still growing. I love how we respect each other and treat each other with kindness and love. We have had our moments as friends, bickering like children, saying things we aren't proud of but regardless of all the disagreements, we are always willing to fix whatever issue that might have caused any problem.

I might not have so many friends in my life but the few I have are awesome and I’m trying my best to make our friendships work.

This is my entry to the weekly contest of the Hive student connect community.

Friends who know how to maintain mutual respect and boundaries are truly exceptional. This way you don't have to worry about constantly bickering about boundaries and all. It's a good thing you met Benson.
