Oftentimes, the word "opportunity" is described as the key to success, but that is not enough. The real power lies in what happens when opportunity meets preparation. When the two align, it creates a strong connection that can lead to an unusual outcome. Throughout history and in everyday life, we have witnessed and experienced individuals who have demonstrated the importance of readiness when the right chance comes knocking. But how does this principle work? Why do we choose preparation as a determining factor for success?
According to the English dictionary, opportunity is a favourable circumstance or occasion. To expand it more, it is defined as a favourable situation or set of circumstances that allow for progress or success. This can be revealed in different ways; through a job offer, starting a new business, meeting a new person, or even the sudden availability of resources.
Opportunities are everywhere and around us but they are passing away quickly, most times unpredictable and often beyond our control. What we can control, however, is our ability to recognize and grab onto them when they present themselves.
One misconception people tend to believe is that opportunities are scarce. But the truth is, there are lots of opportunities often disguised as challenges or that they appear in ways that it is the one who is prepared that can notice. In many ways, we've heard stories of people who happened to be at the right place at the right time, but luck is only part of the equation. Being in the right place does only little if we are not properly equipped to take advantage of the moment.
Preparation, on the other hand, which is a quiet work behind the scenes, is entirely within our control. Preparation is the work we put in before an opportunity shows up. This is the moment we devote hours to studying, refining our skills and the dedication to personal growth. Preparation is often unnoticed and sometimes becomes a hard task, but it is the foundation that brings about success.
Consider an athlete preparing for a big competition. He trains for months, maybe years just to be ready for an event that happens in a day. The opportunity to compete may come and go in a matter of seconds but how well he prepares will determine how best he performs when the moment arrives. Without preparation, the opportunity would slip by and the chance for victory will be lost.
The same principle applies in any sphere of life — whether in business, relationships, education or personal growth. To be prepared means to develop the necessary and right skills, mindset and knowledge so that when the opportunity comes, not only are we just lucky but equipped.
There is a moment of alignment when opportunity meets preparation; this is just like a magic point where readiness meets potential. This moment can lead to a remarkable breakthrough or even a life-changing event. This is when an individual finally lands their dream job because they've honed their skills for years. It is when an entrepreneur secures funding because they've done the research and built a solid business plan, and also, it is when a writer finally gets recognized after years of refining their crafts.
There are numerous examples in history that many of us are taking to measure up our experiences. These examples are people who have found success at the intersection of opportunity and preparation.
One of them is Thomas Edison who invented the electric bulb. As Thomas said, "Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work." He recognized that while opportunities may present themselves, the ones that will seize them are those who have put in the work and are fully ready.
Another notable example is the famous Oprah Winfrey. She prepared for years by refining her skills as a talk show host before she became large in her industry. When the opportunity for her to create her own media empire came, she was ready. Her preparation enabled her to harness the full advantage of the opportunity, which eventually led her to become one of the most influential personalities in the world.
Though it is easier to attribute someone's success to luck or good fortune, we need to realize how preparation plays a much more significant role. Luck may open the door, but it is preparation that will allow us to walk through with confidence. When we are sure of hard work being put into it, we can easily recognize opportunities more clearly and then act upon them more decisively.
Preparation also helps in times of adversity. Not every opportunity comes in a perfectly packaged form, sometimes, they come in the form of challenges. A prepared person can sail through, adapt and turn a lemon into a lemonade. Preparation isn't about perfection, it means progress and consistency.
There are various ways to ensure we're ready when an opportunity comes:
The first is to keep learning and on the go. The deeper we understand, the more we are equipped to handle different situations. Whether it's taking a course, reading or seeking mentorship, continuous learning is key to being prepared.
There is a need to keep developing skills that are relevant to our fields. Whether it's programming, coding, writing, public speaking, or even leadership, developing ourselves to be experts in our areas of interest would prepare us for when opportunities arise.
Sometimes, opportunities don't come in the form we expect; staying open and willing to explore new paths even when they don't seem to align with our plans would help us navigate through.
Lastly, many opportunities come through connections and relationships. Building a strong network can increase our chances of coming across opportunities while receiving guidance on how to prepare for them.
When opportunity comes knocking, are we ready to answer? This is another year and a time to start preparing for the future we want. Let's not wait for the perfect time but to create it by staying prepared.

Without preparation, opportunities would slip away from us. This is why we all need to groom ourselves to be grounded in many stuff cos you never can tell where or how the opportunity might come.
Even the Bible says cast your bread upon many waters for you never can tell where it spring forth again.
Exactly. You are so right. The Bible encourages us to also be prepared in case any opportunity shows up. Sometimes, our waiting and delay is God grooming us and we must not slack in that area. Thank you, sis for your lovely comment 😘

This a good read, as one of my fave quotes say "There is no such thing as luck, Luck is what happens when preparation meets oppurtunity"
