Relocating from my former area, where there was no consistent power supply, to a place with relatively stable electricity made me stop using my generator for a while. Since there was always light, I didn’t see the need for it.

However, on this fateful week, I got home and learned that our transformer had developed a fault and was yet to be fixed. I urgently needed electricity. Choi! It’s time to revisit the gen, I said to myself.

I quickly got some liters of fuel and a little engine oil, filled up the generator, and attempted to start it. To my surprise, it refused to respond. What could be the problem? After several attempts, I was confused. How could a generator remain unused for a while and suddenly develop hard-starting issues?

I decided to troubleshoot by removing the spark plug, cleaning it, and fixing it back. Still, nothing! Choi! This gen wants me to visit the mechanic at this critical time. But was I even ready for that? No!

Then, I suddenly recalled a trick my barber once told me about fixing this kind of issue. Boom! It was time to try it myself.

What did I do?

I reached out to the carburetor, removed the fuel pipe supplying fuel from the tank to the carburetor, and allowed some fuel to drip out. Then, I fixed the pipe back. That was it!

I pulled the starter rope again, just one pull, and the generator roared to life!

Simple, right? You can always try this first when your generator develops hard-starting issues after a long period of disuse, before rushing to a mechanic.

Trasladarme de mi antigua zona, donde no había un suministro eléctrico constante, a un lugar con electricidad relativamente estable me hizo dejar de usar el generador durante un tiempo. Como siempre había luz, no lo veía necesario.

Sin embargo, esa fatídica semana llegué a casa y me enteré de que nuestro transformador había sufrido una avería y aún no lo habían arreglado. Necesitaba electricidad urgentemente. ¡Choi! Es hora de volver al generador, me dije.

Conseguí rápidamente unos litros de combustible y un poco de aceite para el motor, llené el generador e intenté arrancarlo. Para mi sorpresa, se negó a responder. ¿Cuál podía ser el problema? Tras varios intentos, estaba confuso. ¿Cómo era posible que un generador no se utilizara durante un tiempo y de repente tuviera problemas para arrancar?

Decidí solucionar el problema quitando la bujía, limpiándola y volviéndola a colocar. Aún así, ¡nada! ¡Choi! Este gen quiere que visite al mecánico en este momento crítico. ¿Pero estaba yo preparado para eso? ¡No!

Entonces, de repente recordé un truco que mi barbero me dijo una vez sobre cómo arreglar este tipo de problemas. ¡Boom! Era hora de probarlo yo mismo.

¿Qué he hecho?

Me acerqué al carburador, retiré el tubo que suministra combustible del depósito al carburador y dejé que goteara un poco. Luego, volví a fijar el tubo. ¡Ya está!

Volví a tirar de la cuerda de arranque, sólo un tirón, ¡y el generador rugió a la vida!

Sencillo, ¿verdad? Siempre puede probar esto primero cuando su generador tenga problemas de arranque después de un largo período de desuso, antes de correr a un mecánico.
