It's challenging. Welcome to a new fighting game post here on my blog. Now it's time to talk about Yie-ar Kung Fu, an arcade game made by Konami way back in 1985 that has had several adaptations. This game introduced many things that became standard in fighting games that came out later.
To start, our character has an official name and is located in the upper left corner. It's called a long. Nearby, we also have a health bar that decreases depending on how much we're hit or how much we hit until it reaches zero and we lose. Although all hits decrease exactly the same. Also, when we're about to lose, the music will change and go a little faster. One last point about the bar is that if we don't lose any health, we can have a perfect freeze. This was the first game to implement that.
Another new feature is that here we have many characters to face. Unlike Karate Champ, here you feel like you're fighting with unique characters. Each one has a different way of fighting and can have a different strategy to defeat each one. This didn't remain in many future games, but when our opponent hits, a red impact appears to show that we hit them. If the opponent hits us, the impact appears in black. Just like Karate Camp, here too, there can be different punches and kicks depending on how you press the button, along with the movement of the lever. Additionally, a logo will appear below the position in which we have the lever set.
Something a bit strange that other games don't have is that it had a jump backwards. Perhaps they forgot to program it or didn't want two of the opponents to escape when we were very close to us, since in the game you can't take cover and you can see if this time they were getting in, and the match ends very quickly.
Now let's talk about the story. It doesn't have a story. It's the classic thing where you want to be the best by defeating the most powerful rivals in the world. It's something like Go, and its journey is divided into two stories where you face 11 fighters with two different types of scenarios. It's actually quite a challenge considering the limitations of that era.
Characters from the first stage
Wich (inspired by Raiden from Mortal Kombat)
Here we'll face Reid from Mortal Kombat, better known as Which, which is still his move with his name, and being very large, it's very easy to trust him, plus some tactics.
Star The second is to be, and as a curiosity, she's the first woman in a fighting game that exists. She'll spend her time throwing ninja stars all over the stage, which we can eliminate during the annual march to throw some heavy ones. They'd lose more. Charly really does give her an air, but I consider it more than anything that it was an Asian stereotype, the clothes and hairstyle, which make her look very similar to the Street Fighter fighter.
Nuncha Now they follow a cha who uses nunchucks and a yellow suit. For me, she has a great inspiration from Brooklyn, both with the suit and the alarm she uses, especially, it looks a lot like the Game of Dead version in which Bruce Lee He does the same move that is announced when the game starts.
Pole The next one is because he attacks with a voice from a distance. The easiest thing about the character is that he announces that he's going to attack a lot since the bot spins and it's easy to dodge by jumping forward.
Feedle (bonus-type character) The last one in this stage is Fidel Fedor, who, unlike everyone else, has a unique ability: you'll rotate his clones with a single hit. It seems more like a bonus than a normal fight, but it's actually very entertaining.
Stage 2: Master Challenge
Chain (Hans or Hojas) The first character we face is Hans Hojas, but here he's called Change, and he uses a chain to attack from a distance, making it easy to hit him when he uses it.
Fan: Here we have Fano, another girl who attacks using fans, almost always throwing 3s, as she might do poorly in the future, but she has no physical or costume resemblance to her.
Sword: Word attacks us with a sword, and although she has a good instance of our downward kick, she helps us here and really has nothing to do against her.
Tonfun:Everyone will have a couple of Ton phases in each hand, which honestly makes the fight against this character very difficult because she can work you and drain your energy very quickly. You have to be at a great distance to hit her easily.
Blues: Un Long's clone. And finally, we have Blue, who is a character identical to Un Long. The strategy is to hit her and Jump to the other side, hit him, and then jump to the other side. The bad thing is that Blue has very fast punches and kicks and will leave you bloodied if you're careless for even a second. Once we think of Blue, we'll start the whole cycle of fighters again, just like it was done back in the day. This game is really entertaining because it has many characters, and several are defeated in different ways. You can't use the same strategy to defeat them all.
The downside is that they don't have a versus mode, and it's like before, when the first player lost. If the second player lost, the first player followed, and so they alternated between each other. The new verse art would have really been a lot of fun, but not having it is still a lot of fun, as are fighting against different characters.
I played a whole lot of the Commodore 64 version of Yie Ar Kung-Fu and got quite good at it. Far better than I ever was at Street Fighter II, lol.
This is a game that left me a lot of money in the arcade machines.
