Hello Hello to all Hivians, Silver Bloggers and anyone else reading this.
This week's The Silverbloggers Chronicles - Prompt 9 is ....
What advice would you give yourself if you could travel back to your childhood self?
The thought of traveling back in time to offer my younger self some advice is a fun one to entertain.
However I am a firm believer of a no What-If policy!
But being serious for a minute ... it’s a fluffing difficult question to answer.... so thanks @mondoshawan for that!
Thank you Silver Dude After a lifetime of adventures and a fair share of chaos, I can honestly say I wouldn't change much.
The lessons I learned - the hard way - together with my ankylosing spondylitis were the ones that shaped who I am today.
I was always the "have passport, will travel" type.
When oil companies needed someone to work in far-flung, often dangerous corners of the world, I had no hesitation.
My attitude was always to say yes, try something new, and embrace the experience, no matter how tough the circumstances. And tough they were. The oil business is a world of greed, and with greed comes corruption and conflict. I’ve seen my share of war-torn countries and their ugly realities. Maybe being forced to leave Belfast was a sign of what was to come, but even those experiences as grim as they were, taught me things about humanity and resilience that I could have learned no other way. I have seen the good in humanity and I have seen the downright ugly side!
So then when I think about what I’d tell the younger me, it's not about changing my career path or avoiding those tough spots.
Oh fluff no, it's not about doing anything differently, because the life I lived has been a full one and I have loved almost every minute of it.
It’s the one piece of wisdom that takes years to truly appreciate.
When you're young and making good money, it feels like it will last forever. You spend it on exotic holidays, on new cars, on nights out, on everything but a future you can't quite see yet.
I’d tell myself to be smarter with money from the get-go, to put a little away consistently, and to let it work for me over the long run.
In the end, I wouldn’t tell myself to change the person I was, because that person led a truly remarkable life. I'd just tell him to be a little more sensible with the money he made along the way.

Like I've always said, take advantage of travelling and seeing the world while you are young enough to do it. I've been all over the place and lived years of my life in South America and the Caribbean. Travelled over most of Europe, Central America, South American and North America. I've even had the chance to spend some nice military time in Iraq and Afghanistan. And I wouldn't change a thing! We all live large when we are making the big money, and that's fine as long as you are experiencing life.
Just like you I've had a lot of fun, and would recommend it to anyone. Don't wait until you're old to live life, by then travel is a lot less fun unless you happen to be ultra wealthy. Even then the arthritis will slow you down! Great job on enjoying your life and seeing war torn countries as well. Few people get to see those part of the world and understand what true poverty really is.

I worked for Bechtel who the CIA used as a front to get into so many dodgy places. My first boss there was one of the Iraqi held hostages so he had a job for life with Bechtel once he was freed.
Travelling the world is brilliant and I recommend it to everyone. I also recommended to people to explore their own country too!
We both made our own luck and visited places when we could. Something my mother and her father (my grandfather) always told me ... you make your own luck, so go and do it, don't wait for things to happen!

Bumps and scars are what makes us, those seen and unseen. Travel educates one thoroughly to mans intentions, good or bad, we appear to learn.
Solid advice, save from young, you don't need everything that is fashionable, you will need savings on rainy days.

I think you are right, while it is a good thought exercise, it isn't a good place to live. My brother in law told me a long time ago to run from regrets. Probably the best piece of advice he ever gave me that I don't always listen to.
Run from regrets, oh I like that wee saying too...
I would also tell my past self to save more! I never saw this stage coming in Venezuela, because it is precisely an oil-producing country, the first, with the largest oil reserves on the planet. So I didn't see the need to save. This was an excellent topic. A hug to your past self, Ed.
Oh yes I am sure you never saw that coming. A big hug for you Nancy, it is worth its weight in gold 🤗

A sound policy, in my opinion.
As I've read through the posts on this I can't think of a single thing I'd say to my younger self to try and change things. I believe everything we experience is what makes us who we are and any things we might regret at the time only stay regrets if we refuse to learn from the mistakes made. There are also things that may never change no matter what advice you may have been given at the time. Sometimes we just have to make those mistakes in order to learn from them.
I remember a long time ago running one of my first projects and my project controls guy had screwed a cost estimate he presented to a client that I knew well. He turned round to him and so no problem, this isn't a mistake unless you do it again, there should only be lessons learned not mistakes.
100% agree and like I mentioned to Joan above it reminds me of a saying my granny would say ...
In other words "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger,"
Pleasure MadBro... though it was never about changing something 😏. I wouldn't neither. But as you mention the money, it's 'always' about the fluffing money... i can relate to that a 100%. Even though i do not care about it anymore today.
Hehe much easier with a bit of money in your back pocket 🤣

Don't trust anyone .. would be my advise , everyone will screw you when they get the chance.
lol isn't that human nature, yes I am now much less trusting that even ten years ago!

Haha that is a good one. I was thinking about the things I would change and funny enough, they are the financial ones too. Besides buying bitcoin early and maybe some stock in a fledgling google, I would say start training jiu jitsu a little earlier. Not that there is anything wrong with learning late, just the healthy lifestyle it would have enhanced a little more and competing before being past my prime.
Other than that, maybe the rest of the stuff that is awesome now would be even better.
Haha I guess I should have added don't sell the bitcoin you buy 🤣

I always take your advice. I tried😬😌.
Hehe well you have two little things that gobble up your money 😄
“ The thought of traveling back in time to offer my younger self some advice is a fun one to entertain.”
There are two ways to go, one to simply say Buy Bitcoin in 2011…
The other be more thoughtful 🤔
!BBH
hehe well when you have that 2011 bitcoin then you can be thoughtful. I should have mentioned to my younger self not to sell the BTC you got!

Hehehe I once thought of this traveling back and if I was given a chance to change things. I'll take the advice.
You have your whole life ahead of you, so you can do what you want now and have no regrets lol or no need to give your younger self any advice 👀
Being smarter with money is a good one - I've always been terrible at it! And I would never have become a teacher - well, maybe for a little bit, but invested wiser so I didn't have to work again!
I was always brilliant at managing the money of others, I managed multi million pound projects, but my own money haha that was a different story!
Hats off to you for teaching, I did lecture part time in Aberdeen to some Masters students, but the thought of teaching in schools was a no no big time!
Oh God, the thought of teaching the Scottish.... 😂
