An object from my childhood that still works.

It's been four weeks since our beloved Silver Bloggers community published Initiative #48… While I eagerly await #49, I didn't want to remain idle, so I decided to review some of the proposals I couldn't participate in at the time. I sincerely hope the administrators and friends of this community are well; I hope this brief silence is simply due to market fluctuations and the token's declining value, and not serious personal circumstances. I send my best wishes and blessings as I review Initiative #10: The Secret Life of an Object.

An object from my childhood that still works

There are sounds that are etched into our DNA, not our ears. For any Venezuelan, the rhythmic whir of a coffee grinder is the soundtrack of childhood. But ours, that silver "Corona" that my parents installed in the countryside in the 1950s, didn't just grind beans; that machine was a keeper of secrets.

Picture yourself with me in Venezuela, 1965. The cold of the countryside still seeps into your bones, and the mist embraces the coffee plantations. Before the sun dared to peek over the horizon, you could already hear the clack-clack-clack of the crank. My father pressed it against the rustic wooden table with a force that seemed to want to fuse the metal to the wood.

First came the hulled corn, cooked overnight. The machine received it with a growl, returning that pure, white mass that smelled of life. Then came the sacred moment: the coffee. The black kernels, glistening with the oil from the artisanal roasting, fell into the silver hopper. As the crank turned, the aroma filled the house, overpowering the kerosene lamps.

But here's what the official story doesn't tell, and which today, in the age of blockchain and Hive, takes on a mystical meaning. My grandmother used to say that the mill was a "transmitter of truths".

In the town of Cordero, in the state of Táchira, it was said that if you paid close enough attention to the rhythm of the grinding, the machine would reveal the future of the harvest. But there was a deeper secret: The "Dream Depot".

They say that my mother, while grinding the corn for our arepas, would whisper her wishes for us into the hopper. She believed that the cold metal had "memory" and that, as the kernels were ground, those wishes became part of the dough. Each arepa we ate not only nourished our bodies, but was also imbued with an ancestral programming of resilience, work, and love.

That machine was the analog version of a blockchain. Each turn of the crank was a "block" of family effort. "Consensus" was reached at the table, sharing bread. The Corona machine didn't just process food; it processed the identity of a nation that rose early.

Today, that same machine remains in my mother's house in Caracas. It has survived currency changes, dictatorships, the arrival of the internet, and the modernity of electrical processors. My brother, by turning that crank today, is activating a time-travel device.

That object is not just cast iron and a wooden handle worn smooth by the sweat of honest hands. It is a time capsule that holds the source code of our perseverance. When you see the picture of my machine, don't see an old utensil; They see a technology that doesn't need electricity because it's powered by the heart of the person who makes it spin.
