I've been in shock since last night thinking about the Abuja-Kaduna train bombing that happened in the evening. As at the time we got the news, my husband and I were already prepped for our trip to Abuja slated for this morning.
I had bought the train tickets very early in the morning against today and we had made plans for leaving our puppy with a neighbour. We also went looking for the Super Eagles Jersey in order to be fully kitted for the football match we were travelling to see.
The Nigeria-Ghana World Cup qualifier match is by 6pm tonight at the National stadium in Abuja, so we chose to use the 10am train for the 2 hr journey. The roads have been a terror because of the insecurity issues for a long time now, making the railway a safer option.
Unfortunately, there have been attacks on this supposed safer route by the terrorists/kidnappers. Last night seems to be the worse attack on the trains so far. It is reported that amongst the almost 1000 passengers on board, some were shot and the tracks and train itself were bombed.
What makes this even more frightening for us is the fact that we had a visitor over the weekend who had used the Kaduna-Abuja train back to Abuja earlier in the day. I am happy he missed this scary situation and I'm also sad for everyone that was unfortunate to experience it.
We do not have all the details yet but it was reported that the army had intervened and everyone was safe. This information doesn't seem to be the full story because there are many claims of sporadic shooting at the time of the the incident.
The situation automatically means the trains won't be working till further notice and our much awaited trip has been cancelled. I received a text from the train station at midnight that says services have been temporarily suspended.
Well, I am thankful that we didn't make our trip earlier only for this to happen and then we get stuck in Abuja. It's also scary to think that we are stuck in Kaduna currently. The road leading to the Kaduna airport is not safe, the road to Abuja is not safe, and now, the trains are out of service.
The town is basically surrounded by these terrorists who for some reason, the military have still not taken down. We are starting to feel trapped in a town where we don't have ties and a lot of kidnapping and manslaughter is going on in the rural parts.
I think the bombing of the train is a tactic by the terrorists to get people to use the Abuja-Kaduna road today so they can carry out their atrocities. Some people who are looking forward to the football match would definitely want to risk the road travel and I earnestly hope they don't.
It seems our time in Kaduna is gradually coming to an end and we might have to plan our way out of here when this train immobility issue pans out.

Thank God you and your husband are safe, cause the train bombing is a huge disaster with so many loves lost. Thank God for you both, let's continue to put this country prayers.
Ohhh. This is so serious thanks God for life.
It really heart breaking when our home does not feel like home.
Insecurity here and there
May God continue to keep us all
I feel like a visitor squatting somewhere. I have never felt safe in any part of Nigeria I've lived in.
Hmmm, the news is scary but thank God you and your family are away from danger. May the soul of the departed rest and may their family be comforted.
We need God's intervention.
Amen.
Things are just getting worse in Nigeria; flights are expensive, roads are not safe, even trains.
These are the reasons I barely ever travel, too much fear.
Anyways, I am sorry you had to miss the match.
I don't care about the match anymore π I'm pained about the confirmed deaths right now.
Yeah, I was just on Twitter, it's just sad.
Woah. I did not know about this. I didnβt know Kaduna until A few days ago when I realized you guys were there. I know the North has some issues like this sometimes. Itβs great that you were there connecting with people. Stay safe!
We are trying as much as we can to be safe π₯Ί The news has us shaken

Time to come down South o. I wanted to call but I just figured ya'll would be home and not this close to the event. Here I was hoping to come for a visit soon.
It's so scary to think this could easily have happened this morning and we would have been on the train. We are trapped right now π
This is not funny anymore. They have turned this country into (human being) abbatoir. May God help us and continue to keep us safe.
May God be with you ππ½
Amen
My heart goes out to you
I thank the lord you and your hubby are safe
The north has always scared me I donβt know why
It is well with you
