There is a traditional proverb that goes this way;
Conscience is the dog that can't bite, but never stops barking.
It sounds like a mere proverbial line at first, but when you come back to it after going through a fair share of life experiences, you will then realize that the proverb makes so much sense.
People spend the vast majority of their life trying to maintain a certain lifestyle. They try to do things which they believe are in line with the appropriate social and moral order and they try to not get involved with things that don't align with their moral values.
For me, alcohol is something I've been avoiding for as long as I can remember. I don't take it at all. Maybe it's easier to avoid it because I've never had a taste of it, but I'm sure I will be getting a lot of earfuls from my conscience whenever I go against that moral rule of mine. The same goes for smoking. I haven't tried it and it's not on my list of priorities.
There have been some other moral rules I have that I broke at a certain point in my life and it's still an experience which I would gladly wash away from my mind. But you know how the mind works... I can't seem to let go of those memories and my conscience does a good job of screaming at me whenever I go against my moral virtue.
From my experience, it has become fairly obvious that we have to always fight an existential battle between what we preach and what we act out. Saying what is good isn't a big deal, but practising it is not as easy. That's usually where our behaviour fails us. This is why people say they won't do a thing but end up doing it when things get rough.
For people like that and anyone that has gone against his or her moral values, their conscience usually calls them out on that behaviour. It's almost like our conscience is a judge within each of us that we can't convince to pat us on the back when we do something wrong. You can lie to people and also to yourself, but try lying to your conscience...
Nah, it won't have any of that.
To a great degree, I believe that the fact that many people wake up each day and edge their day-to-day activity towards doing what is morally good instead of causing mayhem is all thanks to the fact that they have their conscience as a watchdog. Also, they do a good job of paying attention to their conscience.
It also seems like some people's conscience is more vocal than others. What I've noticed about this is that those who usually ignore the barking of their conscience will consequentially get to a point where they will lose their conscience, or at least dim it.
An extreme example can be seen when someone goes for his first robbery and gets called out by his conscience, but they become 'immune' to the whole barking of the conscience as they dive deeper into that act.
As far as I can tell, losing your conscience doesn't look like something to be proud of. Right? Let the little voice do its job in your head while you focus on living right.

Wonderful post @kenechukwu97 and nice to "meet" you.
I think you can definitely be grateful that you have a strong moral compass, because many people do not these days and they will just "go with the flow" always. For me too, I have always noticed that I am just not able to do things that dont agree with, on whatever level. You know how people talk about "trusting your gut" - that is what I mean. When you do something you know you should not be, or that goes against what you believe in, it is a feeling (and thought) which I just cannot get rid of and most of the time I have to fix it and do the right thing, which is definitely a good thing, I think!
Nice to meet you too, @eliza.anne
Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts on this topic. I genuinely appreciate it and I also like the way to approach the talking point in your day to day life.
Just like you, I also find it hard to do things that doesn't align with my believe. And, I think it's a good thing because it shows firstly that we know what we want for ourselves and we know what we don't want for ourselves. Aside from having this knowledge, we take it a step further by only doing the things we believe are worth doing.
Haha... I wish to continue living this week. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts with me. I genuinely appreciate it.
It really was my pleasure! It was a super read <3 I look forward to stumbling onto more of your writing. Always nice to discover writing with depth :)
Is very surprising that you don't take alcohol or even to taste it, that is very nice very rare though. My dad & husband don't do thesame I love that...but how do you explain that to your friends especially when you go out with them??? You know our society better with that notion of every young man must take alcohol if not they consider the person weak or as a woman. Is awesome to decide on something and stand by it against all odds, An applaud for you for that great decision 🤩!!!!
Hahah... The alcohol notion is something I know too well and I've heard so much about how people get guilt-tripped into taking it. Haha.
Even when I go out with friends, I end up buying Hollandia yoghurt which is pound for pound more expensive than any alcohol they will bring.
I think I made up my mind early enough about all that and I've been lucky enough that ever since I decided not to take it, anything related to alcohol never whets my appetite.
Good to hear...nice choice!!!👏👏👏
Many people have a rethink and make an amend because of their conscience while some totally loose their conscience and act so strange and bad most times. It's never a proud thing to loose ones conscience because the result wouldn't be nice to ones integrity..
I don't wish to loose my conscience at any point in my life. I don't want to imagine what the outcome will look like...it's this conscience within me that has helped me most times in correcting my wrongs.
Exactly. I think our conscience is as important as the physical part of our body. Losing it because we've habitually soaked ourselves with disgusting behavior is no way to live in this crazy world.
It's not fun to get bitten by my conscience, but that's what makes me human and it has helped in my decision making. So, I want mine to always be there and intact. Hehe.
You hit the nail on the head.
Our consciences is actually a judge within us but it's really disheartening how some people have sentenced this same judge to jail such that it has been disconnected from them 😢
Haha... I like the way you said it. It's really an anomaly, but that's how things have been for some people. They have already lost touch with their conscience.

Consciousness is precisely what enables us to analyse what happens to us. Regardless of whether it is good or bad. It is our ability to discern and to contemplate; all through the simple fact of possessing consciousness. Beautiful post, my friend, @kenechukwu97
Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts on this.
Consciousness is clearly a big part of us. I've practiced this for a very long time and I can tell you without doubt that it is one of the interesting things about my life experience.
No need to thanks. You've made an interesting post, friend.

A picked something new here today.
Dear conscience please continue to bark at me whenever i want to do something wrong, i do appreciate your presence😀
Hahah... That's exactly how it should be.
And it comes with an clause; If we don't want to hear it very often, the best thing we can do is to stick to doing what we believe to be good, moral and worthwhile. Hehe.
Hmmmmmmm I see

I think people who did something wrong the first time and continue doing it by ignoring their conscience don't know how to forgive themselves. Understanding that we are human and are bound to make mistakes will help us in training our minds not to go through that lane again, no one is perfect. I must commend your strong mind 😂, for not taking alcohol or smoke, that kind of determination is so rare
Yeah. I think the ability to forgive ourselves is also a big part of the whole exercise. It start by being responsible enough to admit that we messed up. Once you take responsibility for messing things up, we can then look forward to forgiving ourselves for our action.
As for me and my determination to never be on the same path with alcohol & smoke, that's something I've been doing for as long as I can remember. Haha. I enjoy it 😋.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this talking point.
Exactly. Forgiveness gives peace. U are welcome. Good luck on the determination 🤗
