This past weekend was one of the most exciting ones for women’s football, both in Africa and Europe. As a football lover, I couldn’t help but get glued to my screen watching these two matches that had everything from drama, skills, passion and even penalties.
First, let me talk about our own Super Falcons of Nigeria who showed true spirit and class in the just concluded WAFCON semi-final clash against Morocco. Honestly, this game was a thriller. It ended 3-2 in favour of Nigeria, and I must say our girls really came through.
The match started with a lot of pressure from the Moroccan side, especially playing on their home soil. You could feel the energy from their fans and how badly they wanted to win, but Nigeria had other plans. We opened the scoring with a beautiful goal that came from a brilliant team play. Morocco equalised not long after, and it looked like it was going to be a tough ride. But our ladies didn’t give up. Second half came and it was fire for fire. We got the second goal, and later the third one came. Morocco still managed to get one back, but it was too late for them.
That victory meant so much because Morocco knocked us out the last time in a very painful penalty shootout, and getting our revenge this time felt good. The performance was not perfect, but it was full of heart. Asisat Oshoala, Rasheedat Ajibade and the rest of the team really gave us something to be proud of. You could see how much it meant to them, and to us too. Now, all eyes are on the final. Can we bring that trophy home again? Fingers crossed.
Then on the European side, the UEFA Women’s European Trophy Final was another match that had me on the edge of my seat. England vs Spain. Two teams with serious history and great talents. Spain came into the game as the defending world champions, while England were seeking their first major title in a long time.
The match was tight from the very beginning. Both sides were very cautious, and you could tell they respected each other a lot. Spain had more possession, but England had better chances. The game ended in a 1-1 draw after 90 minutes, and even after extra time, nothing could separate them. So it went down to penalties.
Now that penalty shootout was something else. I was literally holding my breath. England’s goalkeeper was the real hero, making two important saves that made the difference. And when that final penalty went in, the whole of England erupted with joy. It was a sweet win for them, especially after losing to Spain in the Women’s World Cup Final some months ago. Football really has a funny way of coming around.
Both matches showed how far women’s football has come, both in Africa and Europe. These girls are really putting in the work and deserve all the recognition they can get. It’s no longer about watching “female version” of football, these games are just as exciting and intense as the men's games.
Big congrats to our Nigerian queens for reaching the WAFCON final. And also big ups to the Lionesses of England for lifting the European trophy. Hopefully, this kind of momentum continues, and more people start giving women’s football the support it deserves.
Let me know if you also watched these matches and what your take was. For me, I enjoyed every minute of the matches
