NCAA Football Week 2 Recap: Victory for MSU!

Despite not winning a single bet that I placed on the football games this weekend, it was still a pretty good weekend as far as the sport goes. At least in my little corner of the world. The Lions won their opening game last night (more on that tomorrow), and Michigan State pulled out what may be one of their few wins this season against Maryland. At least as far as the early season goes. They have a string of cupcake games coming up before a tough first half of the Big 10 season.

We had some crisp temperatures in Michigan this past weekend and that all but solidified the fact that college football season is here. Never mind the fact that we are supposed to climb back into the 80's through the week.

I even pulled some of my homemade chili out of the freezer on Sunday and ate it while I was watching the NFL games. This really is one of my favorite times of the year!

It looks like the rankings are already out on this sunny Monday morning and there are already a few teams that have tumbled down or out of the top 25.

Georgia Tech for example is out of the top 25 after a tight loss to Syracuse 28 to 31.

Arkansas took #13 Oklahoma State into two overtimes, but ultimately fell short 39 to 31. I was pretty happy to watch Michigan get trounced by #2 Texas. I wasn't sure it would go the way it did since the game was at the Big House, but in the end, the better team won and home field advantage meant nothing.

I think it's because Texas brought Matthew McConaughey with them. Is he the new mascot? Just kidding, I love Matt.

Michigan State and Maryland were the only two teams in the Big 10 that had a conference game last weekend. Most everyone else had a cupcake game with the obvious exception of Michigan. Iowa didn't have an easy go of it either falling to #21 Iowa State 20 to 19.

My prediction about #12 Utah falling to Baylor turned out to be a dud as well. The Utes won 23 to 12.

#25 Northern Illinois served us up one of the few upsets this weekend beating #18 Notre Dame 16 to 14.

Unranked Illinois also knocked Kansas out of the top 25 with a 23 to 17 victory. Which is interesting since Illinois is considered one of the worst teams in the Big 10 this year I think.

As much as I hate to say it, Ohio State is looking good again this year. They have been building a good program there and I think in time they are going to get some of the recognition they deserve. They just need to find a way to stand up to those big teams down south.

Finally, Boise State gave Oregon a little bit of scare, but the Ducks were able to come away with a 37 to 34 victory. That gives me a little bit of hope for when Michigan State faces off against Oregon in a couple of weeks here. I'm hoping State continues to work the bugs out of their new team and they can at least compete with the Ducks.

Actually, they have been getting a lot of press I guess. The fact that they manhandled Colorado was a big talking point about how Nebraska is trying to build a team that can win and Colorado just went with a celebrity coach and look where it is getting them. You better believe if Nebraska cracks the top 25 I will be talking about them!
