How to boost in Miner Wars without going broke

If you don't know what Miner Wars is, read my post on my new clan in GoMining called Block Bandits.

Boosting in Miner Wars (GoMining) is optional, but it does help your odds as well as the clans. The way Miner Wars works, first a clan is chosen randomly weighted heavily by how many points everyone has earned. Once a clan is chosen, an individual miner is chosen to earn the reward. Each block increases the clans BTC pool for that week and rewards the winner with GMT tokens based on the current block value.

Boosting increases how many points you earn and is generally best done as early as possible in a block so you can get the most value.

You can see clan boosts show up in teal where everyone else’s boosts will be red.

Knowing how much a block is worth in the league is important to deciding how much and when to boost. For Block Bandits, we are currently in Dune V because it is a new clan and 1x blocks are worth around 12 GMT. You can see the current value of a block by going to history and finding someone who won 1x block.

Generally 1x rounds you want to just ignore, and hope you get lucky. At 2x, this is where boosting becomes more attractive, but I wouldn't do anything more than 1-2 GMT boosts. At 4x you will notice a lot more people start to boost and will do multiple boosts. At 8x, 16x, and 32x, the boosting gets wild.

Boosting helps smaller players compete with larger players, I am considered a whale at 1714 TH, but a single 1 GMT boost will give you 1800 points/second, which a little more than half of my points/second with 1714 TH.

Boosting benefits everyone in the clan by increasing the chance we win the block.

The red fan will give you 100x of your base TH speed. This gets more expensive as you have more power.

The shield will double everyone's base TH in the clan and is more of a community buff.

The rockets are my favorite buff, they increase your points 1800, 18000, or 18000 points/second. They cost 1, 10, 100 GMT respectfully. Generally you want to stick to 1 GMT buffs in Dune except for 8x or larger blocks depending on how aggressively you want to boost.

There is also an instant boost that gives you 400K, 4M, or 40M points which are ideal for short rounds. Unfortunately you have no idea if a round will be 4 seconds or 4 hours. I generally stay way from this buff.

Another buff that is similar to this is the focus buff, which gives you 1M, 10M, or 100M points but only lasts for 5 minutes. This one is a gamble if you think the round will be short, this is a good play, but feels too much like gambling.

Another buff I like is the echo, this gives you 70k, 700k, 7M points every two minutes and increase by that amount every time. This is the best buff for longer rounds and I have been doing a combination of rocket and this buff for 8x and higher blocks.

I generally don't do a lot of boosting, unless I'm around when an 8x or higher block shows up. I generally just want to let me high TH do the work, but as a smaller player, boosts are far more powerful. You have to be very careful not to overspend the round or let it get out of hand. If you watch the rounds you can see some users spend well over the GMT value of a block just to win a block worth less than they spent on boosts. This is common for new users.

As a rule of thumb, spend 1 GMT per 4x block. At least in our current Dune league. If we hit #1 spot we will move to horizon league and the blocks are worth 10x more and there will be 64x blocks. In this league, boosting is far more comon even for 1x blocks.

boost responsibly

Every block is worth boosting, even 1x blocks, but it can quickly get out of hand if you don't win blocks or you overspend. Not spending anything and just playing passively is an option as well, but will be more difficult for smaller players to compete as winning personal blocks is where the returns are.

The way Miner Wars works, every time the clan wins a block, the BTC pool for the clan increases. You get a % of this pool based on your TH. If you have 10% of the clan's power, you will get 10% of the BTC earned. You only earn while you are in the clan, so if you join on Monday, the day before the week ends, you will only get a portion those blocks found after you joined.

Once the clan wins a block, a clan member is chosen to be the winner, this person gets GMT tokens for the win. A 1x block will give around 12 GMT right now. Some leagues it can be as much as 25 GMT in Dune, depending on how much power and how much boosting is present.

You can find our clan by looking for Block Bandits in the Miner Wars game.

I highly recommend downloading the mobile app as it will notify you when a 4x block comes up and when it is time to service (daily) your miners to increase your discount on electricity and service fees.
