Cover image designed by me with Canva

Hello fellow newbies and hiveans. It’s week 2 already of the newbie’s initiative task and I must say I have learnt a lot already. We learnt from Sunday’s class on how to use markdowns, the dos and donts of hive and the use of Canva.

This is my entry to week 2's task of the newbie's initiative task under the supervision of @moremoney28.

This task is about what hiveans are expected to do and not do; the dos and the donts of hive and also canva tutorial.

I hope what I share is in line with the task at hand and others are able to learn from me as I hope to gain corrections from where I make a wrong step and write something out of place.

Let's get into it.

What Are We Expected To Do As Users Of Hive?

Basically, our beloved platform hive is a place for everyone and every author to share their original content. These range from several topics including games, poems, fictional and non fictional stories, blogs about your daily life, and a whole lot more. Anything that an author can share their opinion on which is in line with the community they intend to share it in, is allowed.

The blockchain hive runs on a proof of brain concept or principle which simply means to make contents of your own. Whatever an author is publishing should be written by them and it should be their opinion.

The topics we write on may not always be our own but the contents we submit as part of the write up should be ours. An example is the featured contents hive learners run where topics are presented to verified members of the hive learners community every two days from Monday to Saturday.

Monday and Tuesday's topic was about what you would use the power of invisibility for. You see here that although, the topics were not from the authors, a lot that shared wrote about why and how they will use that power.

Another example will be the newbies initiative task 2. There is a post explaining what markdowns are and the dos and donts of hive. Simply copying or paraphrasing that post and publishing it wouldn't be an original content and hence does not fall in line with the dos of hive blockchain.

Engagement is also very important on hive. We must try as possible to comment, upvote and support the posts of others.

The use of free images or copyright free images is important. You have to source an image that isn’t yours especially if it’s from the web.

What Are The Things Hive Users Are Not To Do?

The most important thing a hivean should not do is plagiarize. Plagiarism is the one thing that is frowned on. It defeats the whole purpose of the proof of brain consensus.

I have seen authors commit several crimes on the blockchain but what I see that you cannot escape punishment for is plagiarism. Just to throw light on what plagiarism is, it is publishing work that is not your own. Copying and pasting someone else's work from wherever and not sourcing it is plagiarism. Thought it was just that but as it turns out, you can self plagiarize. Surprising? 100% yeah 🙃.My mouth was left wide open when I heard this.

It's easy to avoid that though. Just stay away from publishing the same post twice and if there's something you want to use from a post you have made before, it should be properly referenced.

The hive blockchain also frowns on paraphrasing and as hiveans we should stay away. Paraphrasing is simply taking someone's work and using different words to portray the same idea.

One recent development has been the use of AI generated posts. The blockchain has made its stance on the use of AI to write posts. Hive learners is one of such communities that have said they are not in support of the use of AI to generate posts.

Markdowns.

There are ways to make your work more beautiful and attractive to read. These are called markdowns which include bolding, italizing and bold italizing your work. Aligning your texts, centering, justifying your texts, among others are ways to make your posts more attractive.

With some of the hive front ends, there are features you can just click to help with these effects but for some of the markdowns, you need to use codes. I’d be showing a few examples of how to do use these codes in beautifying your work.

  • Headings.

To apply headings, use #. The number of times you use # has an effect on how your title is highlighted.

# First heading
## Second heading
### Third heading

The results from these codes are;

First heading

Second heading

Third heading

These make your titles stand out and really differentiate them from everything else.

  • Text centering.

Centering your text puts it the center or middle of the page. Use the code below to center your text.

You need to use the code <center> text here </center> to center text

The result of using a code like this is;

Text here

This can also be used to center your image.

  • Justify your text.

Justification of your texts is one of the markdowns I have grown to love. It makes the work look more professional to real. The effect this has is that it puts all your texts in line. Not sure that’s clear. I’ll show an example.

<div class="text-justify">
insert your text here
</div>

Without justification, a text like

I am yahuzah, a student of the newbie initiative task and this is my entry for the newbie initiative task 2 where we are required to talk about the dos, donts and markdowns of hive.

With justification, the same text will appear like this;

I am yahuzah, a student of the newbie initiative task and this is my entry for the newbie initiative task 2 where we are required to talk about the dos, donts and markdowns of hive.

78AD70FE-DDCB-4D23-ACFA-8FFD31FBA119.png

  • Bold

To bold your text use, ** at the beginning of the text and at the end of the text.

Example. Yahuzah is my hive username.

78AD70FE-DDCB-4D23-ACFA-8FFD31FBA119.png

  • Italize.

To italize your text use, *
at the beginning of the text and the end.

Example is yahuzah is my hive id.

78AD70FE-DDCB-4D23-ACFA-8FFD31FBA119.png

  • Bold italize.

To bold italize, use *** at the beginning of the text and at the end of the text.

Example is yahuzah is my hive id.

78AD70FE-DDCB-4D23-ACFA-8FFD31FBA119.png

  • Align image left.

To align images left, the code below is used;

<div class="pull-left">
![2C854583-93AB-49CF-AA75-9E8D7CEA1D87.jpeg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/yahuzah/23wXCDqFRVcPEJ6m5ZjrCH8sArJMERhibwhC52MrrU4zghVFPzt4LGgL7B6LLbNiJiLdv.jpeg)
</div>

With this, the image will appear like this;

How I Designed My Thumbnail.

I’m still new to the Canva experience so I always try to make things simple for myself.

  • Launch Canva.

To conclude, hive works on a “post your original principle”. Do not plagiarize, do not pay someone to write for you and do not paraphrase the works of others. Do not vote beg too. And always try as much as possible to source your images.

If you’re someone who finds it difficult to write posts, then maybe being an author on hive isn’t the best for you. You could buy loads of hive, power it up and be a curator. You could also join other projects like the gaming communities and a whole lot more.

Thank you.

Most of us know how to use the markdowns but I thought of including that to show those that don’t know how to do it.
