Letting Go Of My 15 Years Old Big Ugly Shirt

Sleep is an integral part of every human's life and for me, it is a task, a hard one. I find it hard to sleep at night so it is important I create an atmosphere that encourages sleep. This makes me pay attention to my sleepwear.

In January, I bought a new sleepwear that I really liked. It turned out to be a homewear meant for sitting around the house and not comfortable enough for sleeping. I was back to no proper sleepwear and was winging it every night. My old pyjamas is torn and worn out, and my two other sleep shorts are usually not my first choice.

My first pick is always my big sleeping shirt that I've had for over 15 years. I like it for many reasons like being long enough to go down my hips but not reach my knees. It's big, light, comfortable and reminds me a lot of the person that gifted it to me.

It is the oldest clothing item I own right now which is a big deal for someone that always declutters. I guess every woman knows what it feels like to sleep with only a big shirt on, if you don't, you just have to try it to know how freeing it is.

This shirt has seen many days and I can't even tell what the actual colour is anymore. I think it's a bright cream colour but it's faded beyond recognition now. It has a picture of fishes in the sea and a text, "dream...to explore..." which meant a lot to me as a teenager.

Not only did I sleep peacefully while wearing this shirt, I also valued it because it had come from America. My brother's girlfriend at the time had gifted me new clothes and shoes and I fell instantly in love with this lady I had never met. I thought it was a really nice gesture and I never forgot her. Sadly, she died a few years after.

I grew out of the other stuff she got me but this is a very big shirt so it has survived this long. I didn't have a problem wearing it in my parents' house but when I got married I started rethinking my favourite sleep shirt.

If I'm being honest, it looks ugly and not sexy. The tag does say lingerie but there's nothing lingerie-ish about it. It has holes in it and waking up with my tattered hair together with it wasn't pleasing to my eyes. Worse, my dog put more holes in it recently.

I didn't think I'd easily find a replacement but I did. The same site I had gotten the homewear set in January had something very similar to my shirt. I placed an order for one because what kind of psycho needs more than one favourite big sleep shirt? Also, I'm on a low-buy challenge so I don't spend unless necessary.

My package arrived today and I was so anxious about the new shirt. What if it's nothing like my old shirt? Would the material itch? Would it be big enough? Would it be heavy? Will I sleep like a baby in it? Questions, questions, questions!

It's almost bedtime and I'm currently in my new big sleep shirt. Do I like it? No, I don't. I love it! This isn't from America but I love it still 😄 It's so comfortable, not as light as the old one but not heavy either. It's grey in colour and has a blue/purple flower design with a written text, "MAKE TODAY AMAZING".

My sleep tonight will be amazing for sure! I measured the size against the old one and it is as big. The material is also nice on my skin and makes me feel good, just the right mindset I need for a peaceful sleep tonight.

I'm so happy I made this purchase and replaced my old shirt. It will take me some time to adjust to the new shirt being my favourite shirt so I will still keep the old one and even wear it sometimes (don't judge me, we have history).

I like the positivity my sleepwear gives me and I'd advise you review yours to make sure you're very comfortable in them. Good sleep should not be compromised.

Thanks for reading, I'd let you know when I finally do away with my old shirt for real.

Hello @wolfofnostreet,
I could not agree with you that good sleep should not be compromised.
I struggled with insomnia for many years, so I know the importance of finding something that works.

Your post has given me an inspiration to find a comfortable summertime sleepwear. I think an oversized shirt would do the trick.
Thanks for stopping by:)

Yes! An oversized shirt works fine. I got mine two sizes larger and it's so comfy.

Thanks for reading 😁

Now, hubby can find something sexy to feed his eyes upon😁

Gosh, thank goodness, you got a new one, I was freaking out here. I thought you would keep wearing the old one, even with all the weariness... Hehehe.

If you did say, you kept wearing it, I would have personally called a family meeting. I don't want you wearing something that hurts hubby eyes 😂😂

The problem here is that you think I've abandoned the old one just because there's a new one 😂😂😂

Something I'll wear as soon as I wash it 😌

I completely understand the need for the perfect sleepwear! I have disliked having a cold head at night ever since I was a child, so now I always look for sleepwear with a hood. It's not always easy to find, so sometimes I sleep in a top that was meant for wearing in the daytime, If I buy these at the store, I get one or two sizes larger than I would normally wear so it isn't going to be tight. If I sew them myself (which I often do) I make them plenty roomy. I am 65 years old, and continue to struggle with getting a good night's sleep. The perfect pajamas won't solve it entirely, but it helps. I am glad you are so pleased with your recent purchase!

That's right!

I also don't like a cold head and I have a head warmer I wear at night that I'm getting really attached to.

My first pick is always my big sleeping shirt that I've had for over 15 years.

I thought I was the only one that holds onto certain sentimentally-attached clothes for so long.

My sister literally burnt one of such clothes and told me it was time to let go. I still grieve that item till date 😂 😂 😂

Sleep is an integral part of every human's life ...

Exactly, even if I integrate sleep with respect to x ...I don't know what I'd get.
About that oversized tee, I think many ladies love it. Even though I am a guy, when I am home I love to de-cloth myself, let my body free of clothes, even in cold weather but my big bed cover would do the job. 😁

Ah, I enjoyed reading. this! I seem to run through nightwear faster than any other type of clothing and there is always the challenge of finding the perfect replacement. I don't have any sentimental connection to my nightwear (although I completely get that), but it does have to be right for me to get a good night's sleep. So glad you found the perfect replacement 😍.
