Backyard Abundance: My Thriving Vegetable Garden Journey

avatar

Good day, Hive Garden friends, I hope this meets you well. Today I'll love to take you around my garden, situated at the back of my apartment. It houses different varieties of vegetables and crops, and it's always a thing of joy being around it and knowing that these can help reduce the cost of buying some necessary food items.

I've been tending this garden since I moved to this part of the country early last year, and I've gone one to one to plant different vegetables such as pumpkin, red pigment spinach, and scent leaf. I've also got some cassava, and I just recently harvested some maize a few weeks ago.

The varieties of pumpkin that have flowers were gifted to me by one of my next-door neighbors, and it's surprising to see that they have flowers that are this big because the ones I've been used to from years past have been relatively small. But after making some inquiries, I got to know pumpkin comes in both male and female forms, and I was told this is the female variant.

The pumpkin leaf is highly medicinal; aside from being edible, we can also take it for different health issues such as boosting the blood, curing insomnia, and much more. This time around, I just wanted to cut the weeds around the garden and also cut a few vegetables for dinner.

Another vegetable I've got here in my garden is the red pigment spinach, which is a highly nutritious vegetable we use for soup in this part of the world. It's been painful; I couldn't get any of its seeds the last time I visited the market to purchase some seeds of vegetables to plant. Its red flower tends to be attractive and beautifies the garden, though the flower isn't edited, but the leaf of the spinach is.

Last on the tour for today around my garden is the scent leaf. It's one of my favorite vegetables. It has the benefit of making the entire garden smell nice and ushering you into the garden with a pleasant aroma. It's also edible and can be used for different meals of your choice, depending on your meal.

Another reason I love this leaf is the decent aroma it gives to any meal I add it to. Although it's now commonly sold as a powder in a sachet, I prefer this natural one to the one that has gone through different processing and chemicals. I guess that's what we homesteaders and gardeners enjoy with our amazing love for nature, tending, and planting.

Growing up, my mom used to use the scent leaf in situations where any one of her children was having digestion problems. All she did was wash it and drain out the water in it for us to drink, and before you knew it, our stomach upsets and digestion issues would disappear in no time.

That's all in my garden for today; it's good to take you around it. I still have more vegetables, crops, and health benefits the garden poses to us to share with you, but I guess that'll be on another day. I hope you had a great time.

Thanks for your time, have a wonderful week ahead.

It's nice to see that you're making the best use of your environment. Truly, those herbs and plants have several benefits. It's just that I don't like the bitter taste.

Yes I'm grateful for the privilege and space I've to do this.
Sorry about that taste, but it's what it's, it's an alternative to pills.

All the plants and flowers I can see here are available in my garden also but unfortunately, my garden is in the village and my cousin taking care of it now. Watching those photographs reminds me of my garden.

I had never heard of the red pigmented spinach, it is interesting to know these types of plants. The last one I have seen here, it is used a lot for seasoning.

I love the last plants and don't actually know their names in English but in our language they are called "Nnunum." They are great herbs over here in Ghana.
