Silver Santa Claus 🀭

Back with another shiny silver treasure from Germany, this time featuring a fella you have probably heard.. Even if you don't know it!

received_152483711114921.jpeg

A 10 mark Deutsche Mark coin minted in 1988 for the 100th anniversary since the death of Santa Claus Carl Zeiss.

Now, in case you live in a cave, Carl Zeiss was a pioneer in the field of optics, best known for his contributions to the development of the microscope, camera lens, and other precision optical instruments.

He was born in Weimar, Germany in 1816, and started his own workshop in 1846, specializing in the production of microscopes. His legacy still survives under the company he founded under his name "Carl Zeiss AG". A company that is still a big brand name and leader on all kinds of optics, cameras, semiconductors and other shit.

Wikipedia is a great source if you want to learn more about him.

There's not much else going on this side of the coin, so let's have a look at the edge

OPTIK FÜR WISSENSCHAFT UND TECHNIK

Optics for science and technique

I guess a suitable engraving considering Carl Zeiss life revolved around optics.

And finally on the obverse we have...

An imperial eagle πŸ¦… No surprises here and of course no complaints! Eagles are bad ass and a favorite of mine in coins.

And like the rest of the 10 mark coins I have shown you, we have 15.5 g of 0.635 silver which gives us about 10 g of pure silver. Last time I checked, spot was 0.80 $, which means this coin has aged quite well in value! Almost an 8x compared to a modern euro.

Speaking of Deutsche marks, I just finished ordering another two silver marks, and one of them has a design I have been hunting for a while! I have no idea how many are out there but to catch em all is my real test 🀭

Ok that's it for today plebs.

Very cool! Zeiss was a genius and the Zeiss Corporation still bears his name to this day! They did make him look like Santa Clause though didn't they?

Zeiss is a known brand of corrective optical lenses sold by my local optometrist that are very expensive. My prescription is quite strong being blind as a bat. πŸ¦‡ I could save myself at least 8 Troy oz of silver if I didn't go for the Zeiss high index option even should my Health coverage is 50%.
I can live with my heavy bulky glasses πŸ₯Έ and save the silver.
