My first coin from Panama (1/4 Balboa)
The coin I am about to show you is my first addition from Panama, a country for which I know very little of, other than it is used to set up off shore companies and other shady shit. If you asked me to point it in the map I'd have no idea. Lmao.
Maybe somewhere in the Pacific?
Ahh, there it is, in central America. Now I know 😂
That's one thing I like about collecting silver coins, other than their precious metal nature. I get to learn shit :)
So, let's look at the actual coin! A 1/4 Panamanian balboa from 1961... Weird name for a currency!
Turns out the Panamanian balboa is one of the two currencies of Panama (the other is USD) and is named after the Spanish explorer/conquistador Vasco Núñez de balboa which is prominently featured on the reverse side of this piece
Vasco Núñez de Balboa (Spanish pronunciation: [c. 1475 – around January 12–21, 1519) was a Spanish explorer, governor, and conquistador. He is best known for having crossed the Isthmus of Panama to the Pacific Ocean in 1513, becoming the first European to lead an expedition to have seen or reached the Pacific from the New World source
Lettering on this side is pretty basic, UN CUARTO DE BALBOA for "One Quarter of a Balboa"
Ok let's flip the coin
Here we have Panama's coat of arms. Quite complex and with lots of small symbols and shit going on that would need a post by themselves to write about. Wikipedia has a great article if you fancy some reading !
But what I really like is how the weight and the purity is engraved. That's a really rare sight on silver coins and quite handy if you ask me. So, as the coin says, it has 6.25 grams of 0.900 purity. Not bad!
Nothing special on the edge of the coin
And here's how 6 grams of silver (or about 4.4 euro with today's spot) look compared to a regular euro coin
Almost same size, yet the Balboa is worth over 4x! Impressive!
Ok that's it for today's post, hope you learnt something new. I know I did!

Ooo that's really nice, the coat of arms and helmet look amazing, the Panama papers was the first thing that came to mind for me too 😂
🤭😂
Cool silver coin and I like the look of the Spanish explorer, he looks quite tired for going so far away 😄 Nice expanding your collection and exploring coins from such countries as Panama, I guess they are rare to procure.

😂
Panama known by the Panama Canal!🤔
That too I guess 😂
Heard the same thing about it. Glad to learn something New!
Well, that's a Pretty Cool coin... tho I liked back side of it... Looks more fancy.
Very cool!!!
One of the three coins that I love in the batch!
🥳🥳🥳
From its Weight, I figure it's about 1/5 or Two Tenths of an ounce... If that's the case, (as per "my version" of a World Standard) the 1 Balboa should have had a 2 Balboa Face Value... Each Tenth of an Ounce needs to have a $1 Face Value, here in the United Space of America...
The Balboa is one of my favorite designs. Nice grab.👍
He does have a funny hat 😂
Thanks for the history lesson and I remember where the country was due to the Panama Canel. It was right in the middle of the americas.
