FIRME Y FELIZ POR LA UNION (5 Sol, 1900)

What's up plebs?!

Today's silver coin comes from a place far far away, at least from where I am standing. And it's also my first and only (for now) piece from that country:

So what we have here is a ⅕ Sol from Peru minted in 1900. Fun fact, the word “sol” comes from the Spanish word for sun.

Although the Peru currency is still Sol this coin is no longer legal tender as the sol of back then (also known as sol de oro) was retired in 1985.

Now let's get the coin out of the capsule and see some more pics

The obverse features the country's coat of arms as described by Peruvian law:

The arms of the Peruvian Nation shall consist of a shield divided into three fields: one celestial blue to the right, with a vicuna looking inside; other white to the left, with a Cinchona officinalis placed within, and another, red, in the bottom and smaller, with a cornucopia pouring coins, signifying with these symbols the treasures of Peru in the three realms of nature. The coat of arms shall be surmounted by a civic crown in flat view; and accompanied on each side by a flag and a standard of national colors, further described below.

Here's a link to wikipedia if you'd like more info on the symbolisms and stuff.

The reverse depicts "Libertad" (Liberty) and comes with text

FIRME Y FELIZ POR LA UNION
5° DE SOL

For

1/5 Sol, Strong and Happy through Union

Firme y Feliz por la Unión is a regular motto in old Peruvian currency.

When it comes to silver, this is a 5g coin of 0.900 purity. Nice :)

Here are some more boring semantics from Numista in case you care:

Issuer Peru
Period Republic (1822-date)
Type Standard circulation coin
Years 1888-1917

Weight 5 g

Thickness 1.2 mm

Demonetized Yes

And that my friends concludes yet another silver coin. I really like the design of this one, especially the Peruvian coat of arms! Hopefully one day I'll get more pieces from the country!

Ok this is it for today!

Stack on!

Nice Peruvian coin, I love them! I still will buy them whenever I find them for a good deal in the coin shops. I picked up a lot when I lived in South America, very cool coins! So now you've got some Cuban silver and Peruvian? What's next?

Honestly bro that Peruvian coin looks awesome. I like the history behind it, especially the design with the coat of arms. It's cool to see coins tell stories about different places. This one is a keeper
