Canada's Silver 50 Cents

avatar

This is the last silver piece I want to show from the from my newly acquired "Voyage of Discovery" 2000 proof of set coin collection. The rest are designs I have already featured in previous posts (although with a lesser silver purity) or they are just not made of silver!

So today's coin is a 50 cent piece that is imo a bit boring when it comes to looks

Nothing special here, just the Canadian coat of arms. I must admit though, it's really detailed, though my camera and the plastic case didn't help much to capture it. 😅

This is a particularly complex coat of arms, with many symbolisms. A lion, a unicorn, some Latin, a shield divided in 5 parts and so much more shit going on. Let's ask chatgbt about them!

The Canadian coat of arms is a symbol of the nation's history, identity, and heritage. It consists of several elements that represent different aspects of Canadian heritage and culture.

At the center of the coat of arms is the shield, which is divided into four quarters. The first quarter features three golden lions, representing England; the second quarter has a red lion on a gold field, symbolizing Scotland; the third quarter features a harp, representing Ireland; and the fourth quarter features three green maple leaves, symbolizing Canada.

Above the shield is the Royal Crown, which represents Canada's status as a constitutional monarchy and its ties to the British monarchy.

On either side of the shield are supporters, a lion representing England on the right and a unicorn representing Scotland on the left. The two supporters are holding a banner with the motto "A Mari Usque ad Mare," which means "From Sea to Sea" in Latin, reflecting Canada's vastness and diversity.

Finally, the coat of arms is topped by a red and white banner with a maple leaf, which is the national symbol of Canada.

Well that was educating!

Moving on the other side, we once again have a portrait of Queen Eli. At this point I am just so tired of seeing her old face again and again and again 😅😂

Yeah I'd agree, a bit meh. I wouldn't get that one. Coats-of-arms never really do much for me. But hey, silver, right?

Bring on the sexy eagles!

Canadian 50 Cents just don't get used often enough so their mintages tend to be relatively small. Frankly, I have only received one in change in my life. Many of these coins therefore tend to be in excellent condition. Before the 60s, the 50 cents was more well circulated.

How come you don't use them that much?

I think that back in the early 60s, the Cashier machines were not designed to accommodate all the coins and notes. The 50 cents were the least used and Vendors stopped ordering them. So if the 50 Cents don't get any distribution by vendors then they don't get out into public circulation.

I tried to spend a 50 Cent and got a funny look, "Is this a real Canadian coin?"

So now we're tired of Canada😭😂😂😂

The amount of details in the coat of arms is a bit rich(much) though😂😂
Perfect for an impromptu test

@trumpman without looking at your post, and without asking infamous chatgbt, what does the animal in the 4th quarter of the shield of the Canada National Coat of Arms symbolize?
