Who is the Real Problem: The Coach or the Players?

When a particular football team seem to not be performing very well, who do we say is the cause? Is it the Coach or the Players? Or both parties are to be blamed?

In this post, I will try to discuss my personal opinions on the subject matter. I'll be looking forward to reading your personal views about this topic as well.

Let's get started...

In the football world, we have come to see over the years that, whenever a particular team isn't performing very well in the aspect of winning matches or bagging trophies, the coach is always the first person to be blamed and not the players. And in most cases the coach is often being sacked and relieved of his managerial duties. Many a times too, players in the squad call out for the coach to be sacked.

It pains me to see that players don't get punished for their bad results instead the coaches suffer the highest blame. Yes, coaches have a critical role to play but if you ask me, I'd say that the players are the main/ primary cause of bad results.

Why Players?

Because they are the ones on the pitch playing and not the coach.

They are the ones not giving their best while in action. Players are the ones who miss clear chances of goal scoring when the opportunity comes and not the coach. Players are they ones who do not tackle and defend well while playing. So, players are the primary cause of bad results/ performances and not the coaches.

Some players tend to be very lackadaisical and rough while playing and in the end a bad result comes out. I have watched matches where strikers miss numerous golden opportunities of goal scoring and then they end up losing. After the game, we see the coach being allotted the highest blame.

It might interest you to know that in every match, it is the players who are directly involved and not the coaches. So, my argument is that players should be given the highest blames and not the coaches. Equally, I'm in no way saying that the coaches don't play a role in team's overall performance.

The Coaches

Club coaches or managers play a very critical role in the overall performance of a particular football club. This is because it is the coach that makes the decisions, selections and choices of playing formation as well as players to be in action. These are all critical aspects of every football club. And if not done rightly

will always result in a disaster.

Oftentimes, we see coaches make wrong player selections and some do not even know how well to use a particular player. When this happens, the player will tend to underperform because he isn't playing in his favourite or right position. Another area where coaches miss it is the choice of team tactics and formation.

A case study is Tottenham Hotspur, this club was one of the clubs I admired and they usually played attacking football. However, when a certain coach took over the club, we saw Tottenham Hotspur underperforming because this coach opted for a defensive football instead the attacking football the players were used to.

Just like you would predict, the coach was sacked because Tottenham Hotspur almost lost it name in English football as they were always losing and dropping on the league table.

In addition, we see coaches with very low charisma lacking the needed spirit to charge players to keep pushing even when they are behind in a particular game. Some don't have faith and believe in their players to deliver.

For these reasons, I say that coaches deserve to be blamed and sacked when the club they're managing isn't performing as expected especially when a lot finance are at their disposal.

On the whole, both parties play contributory roles when bad results become the order of the day. Instead of heaping more than enough blame on the coach, the blames should be spread across. Most importantly, both coaches and players should learn from their mistakes as this would help the entire team become better and stronger.

On another note, players should learn to support their coachbecause I see certain players portraying lazy attitudes just so the coach is sacked.
