On July 2, 1997, what would become one of the biggest hits of the summer was released in the United States. Men in Black is an intergalactic fantasy comedy influenced by 1950s science fiction and Soul or Friends.
If this movie had been released any other year, it would have been the highest-grossing movie of all time, but it had to compete with Titanic and came in second place. Of course, the total revenue was $587.7 million.
Men in Black tells the story of the men responsible for hiding information about extraterrestrial life from Earth and silencing witnesses and other conspirators.
And what story was the original blockbuster based on? Men in Black is based on the comic by Lowell Cunningham published in 1990. But this story was much darker and more brutal, and the Man in Black had no qualms about killing, threatening and intimidating anyone he considered a stranger. In the film this was solved thanks to the flash, a small cylindrical object that looks like a pen that erases the memories of those who took the drug with a powerful flash of light.
With a budget of $90 million, Men in Black is the highest-grossing Friends movie of all time and one of Hollywood's most successful sci-fi comedies. So far there have been two sequels, an animated television series and a couple of official video games.
