When I want a good talking to!

Hello Hello people and minimalists ...

I have seen some great posts recently regarding books, and they were responding to a prompt.

Namely ...

PROMPT: Book lovers gather around! Tell us how minimalism and the love of literature mix together in your life. Are you a physical book lover, or do you prefer e-books?

I love books, I am ever writing one.

I was going to answer this prompt, in fact I even had the body of this post drafted, but I was waiting for a response to my question on the prompt post #KISS-Blog-Idea | W- 73

My question ....

Do audible books fall under the e-book category?

The answer ....

image.png

Enough with the waiting for an answer and having that as an excuse for procatination!

So I am taking the advice of one of my favourite books in my now minimal (physical) book collection ...

image.png

PS a wee prize if you know what that means!

I know how hard it is to monitor and respond to replies on community pages etc.

So time to publish this before I write the topauthors post for Silver Bloggers.

Books books glorious books!

I fluffing love books. I always have and I always will.

Fact! I have been fascinated with reading from an early age.

Actually, now that I come to think of it, it is one reason my mother said I became a Chemical Engineer.

When I could hardly walk I would be sitting at the dining room table with a box of cereal in my wee hands trying to recite the ingredients.

Me: Ok how do you pronounce this one mother?
n nic nicotine oh no is that what you smoke mother?

Mother: ooft give me the box Edward

Me: Ok here

Mother: That's not nicotine that's niacinamide, and anyway where did you learn about nicotine?

Me: Granny told me Mother, when I buy her cancer sticks she says thank you for her nicotine fix.

Mother: Wait till I tell your Father about what his mother makes you do!

Me: Yes mother, what is this one say vitamin B2 ribbon flavour?

Mother: Oh Edward it is riboflavin.

Now eat your cereal up, before it goes cold!

Me: Oh don't be silly mother, how can cereal go fluffing cold!

Well my memory is foggy, but she would say I would read anything, and that included ingredients on food boxes and packets. That in turn led to an interest in chemistry and ultimately chemical engineering.

My parents moved to Orkney from Edinburgh when I was 10, I stayed behind as it was only for a year, and me being a big boy had no problems going to baording school.

Well of course the one year turned into several.

It did give me independence at a young age, and well you just have to try out things that you read about. Remember when I was a lad, internet not even available to the masses!

So we would get books, apart from the ones that we had to have for school.

It also meant we had lots of free time to read books.

I started to acquire them. Then the first problem arose...

What do you do when you are moving via a train. If your suitcase is full of clothes, where do you book a hundred paperbacks?

When I left school that was the first time that I had to get rid of my personal books.

As much as I love holding a book and reading from a book, they are bulky. One or two even three or four are not, but when you have collections in the 100s then it becomes bulky and you need places to store them.

So it goes on.

image.png

The older I got the more I downsized, the more I realised I needed less and less materialistic things. Gone are the days of the four-bedroomed house when we had books everywhere.

Now if I want to keep a physical book, then I will get rid of one, which usually means donating it to a charity shop or book banks like I am doing in the picture below 👇

image.png

The digital era has spawned e-books...

My honest opinion ....

I am not a fan, my favourite place to read a book was whilst soaking in a bubble bath.

Dropping a book in the bath is one thing, dropping a phone (how on earth can one read a book on wee phone is beyond me ....) or a decent sized tablet is a fluffing nightmare.

I know ... yeah I have dropped all three!

I love audio books, yes I have audible and listen to my books whenever I am on the go.

Now, you know why I asked the question on the prompt post!

Thanks for visiting and enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Before the mobile phone times, someone was reading ingredients, others were reading washing machine detergent boxes in the toilet! 🤣 😂

I didn't collect books for the reason that you named, so when I would like to read something, I would go to the library...

I'd like to know what the title of the yellow book means.
Seems like Scottish, but I can't find a translation.
I mean that one word, "Wheesht" is throwing me
So it's "Oh [something] and get on with it?"

You are spot on, it is Scottish...
Wheest can be translated as "be quiet".
You pretty much got it!

I read, but I wouldn't call myself a fan of it. It takes me forever to get through a book, so I find it tedious and annoying. I would probably do more if it if that weren't the case. I have a book I am reading right now that is going to take me several months to get through I think.

lol well I like the radio and I like an audio book as I can other doings. The problem with reading is that you are reading and that is it!

It's just so difficult for me. I think if I could do it quicker I wouldn't mind it so much.

I tried audio books, but I fell asleep after few minutes everytime I listen to them. Maybe, I'm just used to paperbacks that much.

That's a good question about whether audiobooks fall under the category of e-books, I think the answer would be yes. Also, that's a great habit about donating a book whenever you purchase a new one. I do love seeing books displayed and also love the smell of books, however, smaller living spaces that I tend to prefer, definitely limit what books I can keep.
You are such a storyteller. You strike me as a big reader, indeed:)))

You are such a storyteller.

Yeah my father was the Irish nurdling champion three years in a row, which is the ability to tell a lie as a truth and vice versa, so picked up my storytelling from him ( or is bullshitting 🤣 ).

Great #kiss and I realise I left out the main reason I like audio books, is that I can be doing something else whilst listening. Reading a book does not let you multitask!

nurdling

That's a special skill you know. It takes a lot of courage to do such, but I guess some people are just natural at it 🤣
Yeah, bullshitting for sure 😂

The main reason I like audiobooks, is that I can be doing something else whilst listening.

I get that, and it's one of the reasons why I love the "Listen to Post" function on PeakD. It has helped me to improve my concentration because I can listen to posts using my wireless headset while doing other stuff.

It's an amazing way to multitask, and a brilliant point indeed 🙌

Snap, it is a corker of a feature!

It takes a lot of courage to do such

Saved my life in Gabon with some drunken soldiers and then in Algeria with some fundamentalists, but it does courage either that or sheer stupidity 🤣

I can see some positives in being able to do so, as you've proven there 😆

My Kindle is said to be water resistant. I haven't tested that.

My wife and I also love books. But she reads loads of romance novels, maybe two or three per week. We were getting crowded. That's when we switched to ereaders. Even so, we have too many books. It's a major nuisance when we are moving house. A box of books is quite a workout to move.

Ah, you don't want to test that!

My wife is a big crocheter so has lots of books around that, and a huge Terry Pratchet fan, she has all the discworld books, so now I let her keep hers and I have a handful and that is it.

This was so fun to read. I smiled a lot of the antics of little Ed. Reading every single thing you laid your hands on. I think that's why you turned out so wonderful and so damn smart!
Audio books are fun. I've tried then once. Should try them again since you find them so nice.

I meant to say in the post about Audio books, is that they let you do something else whilst listening to them. That is the only drawback with books, yep you need to be focused on them.
And look at you, such a charmer and flatterer now!

I think that's why you turned out so wonderful and so damn smart!

Dropping the phone in the bath can be very bad, a book not so much! Great book, without reading the other posts I definitely couldn't have gotten it. I knew it was Scottish but the wheesht was throwing me!

Collecting books is a great hobby, the only problem is that they become harder and harder to store the more you accumulate.

"Oh Well now, get on with it...." Books are what we enjoyed, all we had to escape was turning pages of a book on wet days, under the blanket at night with a torch.

Hee ho hum, yup books took you into worlds never adventured around you, all in the mind, so it is you can spell and read now.

I haven't tried listening to an audio book. Well, one thing about me is that I love reading myself than listening via audio. It would feel like I am not connecting at all.

I am still trying to read what the words on the books means, but not getting it. I even thought the words were turned upside down but I don't think so.

I understand you but I think I still prefer physical books. I can at least place it on my chest or close to my bed when I sleep off from reading.

It seems you have given the answer for the title of your favorite book but I got the answer immediately I saw it. Guess I picked it from my love of watching "dwarf" movies or so.

Thank you for sharing this. !LUV from @dreemport #dreemerforlife

Not sure how you manage to use audio books and get to focus, especially when your eyes are open. But it works for you, eh? I kind of like having a mental picture of the pages in my head, and that keeps me focused.

Also, can I ask what title you're giving your current book, since you ever writing?
