Don't let it get to you

Good day to you and welcome to my blog.

I will be sharing something that I feel is happening everywhere and some people have been affected because of it. When I started working in the school that I teach, I saw a lot of things amidst my learners that I really don't like and I decided I was going to do something about it.

My students.

The first issue was lateness to school. I discovered that most of my learners will leave home early and decide to stay outside during assembly time. I adopted the method of giving them punishment once I did not see them on the assembly ground. These set of students I assigned them to the school cleaners to engage them after school hour and because many of them don't like the idea they were forced to come early to school and that was how the problem was solved. I stopped doing this when I heard some staffs saying that I am doing that to gain favour and recognition from the principal. They started criticizing me and I let that get to me.
Secondly, I noticed that their performance in English language and mathematics was poor, I was willing to assist them and I started taking them classes very early in the morning. I did that for two weeks when there was argument among teachers that I am teaching the students a subject that is not in my line of study and that was how I stopped.

My learners doing online assessment.

There was this particular week that I and some members of staff were on duty and it is expected of us to organize the class on duty to clean the school premises and also punish late comers. I was the youngest among them and the lowest in rank. I tried to cover up for others, I will wait till everything that was needed to be done is perfectly done. I got discouraged when this same set of people called me aside to warn me for doing too much. I still allowed it get to me and I changed to what they wanted.
I wasn't happy because people don't appreciate my effort Instead they see me as someone seeking attention.
Gradually I because a perpetual late comer too and do things the way others are doing it.
I got encouraged when one of my students came to me and said "Miss Oloyede you taught us to be punctual , you are no longer punctual" I wanted to cry that day, she saw my reaction and gave me a hug. She said "aunty I know you are new, please don't join them continue being you because we enjoy seeing you happy". Since then i don't care what others are saying, so far what I'm doing is right I keep doing it.
A great lesson that I learnt is when you lift others you are also lifted. I was helping my students to be early in school this made me punctual too. When you are discouraged, the people looking up to you will be affected.
Also, listening to criticism will kill ones vision if not handle with wisdom.
Thanks for reading my post.

Aww that’s definitely a sweet student
You really need to keep being you and I definitely know that most of the students look up to you because of the impact you are having on their lives.
Keep up with the good work.

A nice write-up. Even I worked in a school for 15 long years. So I can understand, many will not like what you do. Its usual. But I appreciate the little girl who recognized you as what you are. Your timely punishment and advice for students will be recognised, once they realize what they achieved.

In every organization, there is criticism but please don't let that affect you in any form.
I'm a teacher and I can categorically tell you, it is everywhere.

That little girl's appreciation has defined who you are.
Keep being the real you!
