A Day With Mr Governor

It's been a busy month, recounting the experiences and lessons learnt in the first month of the year makes me feel hopeful and energetic. One of the great events for me this month is the international day of education, which was tagged by the organization I work for as "a day with Mr Governor".

I am a Teach For Nigeria (TFN) fellow and I have been in the fellowship for almost two years now. TFN is an organization that recruits young graduate in Nigeria to work as teacher leaders in underserved communities in other to bridge the gap in educational inequalities and also to savage the systemic anomalies in the educational system of the country.
I got selected to joined the fellowship in 2022 and trained to joined the Lagos state teaching service commission that same year. I was posted to a school with alarming population of students who prioritize learning handwork over coming to school. I battled with low performances in their academics for a some periods before I could come up with a plan that change their perspective about life.

Not to digress from my main topic of this post, we couldn't get partnership with the state government for the concluded year due to election and change of power in the political domain.
This year, to celebrate the international day of education, the teaching services commission in partnership with Teach For Nigeria hosted the Governor of Lagos state on the 29th of January, 2024 to discuss the problems of education in Nigeria as a whole, Lagos state in particular and the impact of TFN fellows to address these problems across the state.

The Governor was overwhelmed and appreciated all stakeholders in the educational system and also endorsed another five years contract with Teach for Nigeria to employ more fellows in Lagos state and also absorb them into the educational system after completing their two years in the fellowship.

The event was a great reunion for my colleagues and I, as many of us never saw each other since we parted ways at the institute training in 2022. We were so happy to be appreciated by the Governor and also for another five years contract with the state educational board.

Myself with my friends.

Reflecting on this,I remembered one important key that opens doors of opportunities, this key is "Story Telling" this is one thing I will always remember the fellowship for. Tell your story to the world, stories of every little impacts you are making. Never keep it to yourself, just keep sharing it on every platform. TFN shared their stories of impact and they were able to get access to further their goals. So, I have decided that this year I will share my stories of impact more not only because I seek access to a greater opportunities but because I believe my impact stories will help generations even when I am no more.
Thanks for reading my post.

This is a good one for you. It's a good way to reunite with people in the same fellowship and having the Governor present shows that y'all are doing something that's well appreciated.

I like what you said about "story telling". We all have those moments in our life which can be shared. We don't really know who's reading, but our stories can be an inspiration for other people.

I hope February proves to be equally memorable for you.

How inspiring this is. I had never heard of TFN until I read this, such important work you guys are doing, especially in a place like Lagos, where education is not prioritised by many.

I'm not a fan of Governor Sanwo-olu at all, but it's commendable that he recognised the significance of your work and has extended the contract.

Kudos to you and your colleagues, I hope you get all the accolades you deserve, plus extra.

Big ups! 🌻
