Childhood training became a valuable asset

The first thing that came to my mind when I saw this prompt was the first day my mom took me to a tailoring school when I was a kid.

One thing about knowledge is that it is never a waste because as time goes on in life you will definitely use what you know somehow.

I was raised by a single mother and being a single mother can be exhausting but I was just a child and I didn't know how heavy my responsibility was to my mom I wasn't the only child, I still have siblings. Training 9 children at the same time is not a day job, not a simple thing to do, but my mom stood up to train us so that we could have a better life.

One day she sat us down and asked, "What did every one of you want to become in life?" That looks like a funny question to me because I was just a kid but I answered, "I want to be a newscaster,". My siblings answered as well and after we were done talking she smiled and replied, "We live in a country where you can't just rely on one job, so for that reason, every one of you would acquire hand skills, so that in the future anywhere you find yourself you wouldn't be disappointed because we don't know what the future holds,".

I was a very lazy child when I was little so I started to grumble immediately she said that, and she told me I was going to learn tailoring.

I quickly replied, "Mom, Tailors are always poor, I want to be rich and that is why I chose a newscaster," she laughed at me again and told me to just know what it feels like to be a tailor.
I stopped complaining and the next day she took me to where I would learn tailoring, when we got there I saw my peers but I didn't like the work I had no say over her decision so I started learning work as planned by my Mom.

Six months later, one of my Mom's friends brought a cloth to our house that I should help her sew, she told me that my Mom had bragged about my handwork.

I was scared at a point because aside from sewing in the presence of my boss I had never seen at home before, and that would be the first time someone is giving me a cloth to sew aside from helping my boss in the shop.

I collected the clothes and that was when I knew I could do a lot of things only I was ready to do it, she loves clothes and my Mom was surprised that I had started sewing already.

After secondary school, I stopped sewing because I learned the work for my Mom sake and immediately after I gained admission I forgot about everything I had learned as a kid and focused on what I had in mind to do.

After graduating, nobody was ready to employ someone who didn't have experience so I had no choice but to go back to my childhood work, tailoring.

Though I didn't open a shop to be a full-time tailor but I have few customers who pay well and I do the sewing at home, in fact, I have never paid a tailor for sewing before since I could do it myself.

I am glad I acquired the knowledge because it happened to be my side hustle now as an adult.
