Castillo de San Jorge .:. Wednesday Walk Vacation Tour Part 6 - Lisbon

avatar

After seeing that title Final Destination from my last #WednesdayWalk post, you thought that we are done with that amazing New Year vacation trip? You were wrong! Unfortunately or luckily, I suppose that depends from person to person... For me, it's fun to create these posts as I remind myself about how great was on that trip, but also, learn more about the places where I was... It is kind of in reverse to learn AFTER, but it's better now than never... 😃

As we were 3 days in Lisbon, we had more time to explore interesting parts of the city... On the first day, we were just walking around the main street and the river banks, but on the second day, we planned to go to Castillo de San Jorge... If you go to Lisbon, you have to check it out as views from up there are stunning! You will see plenty of it in this post, but it is much better when you see it in real!

01.jpg

For the beginning, just a few facts about Saint George's Castle from Wikipedia... Like most castles, it is built on the hill and the first human settlements began back in the 8th century BC, while the first walls were built around the 1st century BC! It was occupied by many nations, including Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, and Moors... Finally, in 1147th it came under Portuguese and it played an important role in the history of Lisbon and Portugal! It was a royal palace, and military barracks, and today, it is a national monument and museum.

02.jpg

It wasn't just ruined by "human" enemies, but also, by previously mentioned (check last post) big earthquakes that hit the city in the past... But, after every big "hit" Portuhgueses would renew and rebuild the damaged buildings and walls... Probably because of that, it is still very well preserved despite having over 2 millenniums...

03.jpg

04.jpg

After getting tickets and entering the castle, we didn't have to walk too much to get to these stunning views of the city and river in the back! And this was just the beginning...

05.jpg

06.jpg

07.jpg

A couple of old canons are preserved and show how the city was defended by the attackers from the river (sea)...

08.jpg

09.jpg

In the previous post, I took a photo where you could see this castle in the background, well this one is looking toward the elevator... It is hard to see it in the distance, but it is down there 😃...

10.jpg

This is one of the "rare" photos from the "inside of the walls"... I was photographing mostly the views of the city from above... 🤦‍

11.jpg

12.jpg

This guy was shy and didn't want to show his beauty... yet... Stay tuned... 😀

13.jpg

14.jpg

Taking look at the map of the Castle and where to go...

15.jpg

16.jpg

17.jpg

This is the center of the castle, and I suppose that all the most important "events" were held here...

18.jpg

19.jpg

Climbing up on these narrow stairways to get a better look from the Castle walls...

20.jpg

...and another stunning view of Lisbon from "above"!

21.jpg

22.jpg

23.jpg

...a small window to spy on your neighbors... Just kidding... lol...

24.jpg

25.jpg

This small entrance leads to one of the "towers" of the Castle...

26.jpg

27.jpg

...playing with sun rays and looking at these great pine trees... They have probably a couple of hundred years! Not old as the Castle, but still...

28.jpg

29.jpg

30.jpg

As you can see in the photo above, it is possible to do a whole 360 Degree route around the Castle and as it is the highest point of the city (and the hill where it is situated), you can observe the city from all sides!

31.jpg

32.jpg

33.jpg

Another look at a bit "wider" map that shows some buildings outside the Castle, but I suppose that they were also part of it in the past...

34.jpg

This part was a bit "disconnected" from others and almost nobody was visiting it... It is an archeological site where you can learn about how it was to live inside the walls... There are guided routes, but unfortunately, we were at the "wrong" time of the day...

35.jpg

36.jpg

37.jpg

38.jpg

39.jpg

There was a small museum building which I did visit, but I didn't take photos inside... It was a bit too dark and photos aren't good for sharing... Maybe next time when I have the digital camera with me...

40.jpg

41.jpg

And here we are... At the end of this Castillo de San Jorge short tour... As I promised you, we met again this beautiful guy... This time, he was more inspired to show his beautiful feathers... Probably he did it not because of us, but rather that female friend in front... 😍

42.jpg

I think that I have a bit more material for the last walk around Lisbon and then we will continue on the way back home... Stay tuned...

Thank you for your valuable time,

~ph~

haha you keep that beautiful guy at the very last photos. : )
would be so nice to be able to visit the castle. Lovely view of the city as well.

I wish the old palace and fort from the kingdom time could still survive here, but the material used is quite different.

Maybe they will create some Virtual 3D tours... That would be a great experience for sure... I suppose we will see something like that soon...

The photos from the castle wall look amazing with all the city view, very well situated the castle and the peacock at the end came though, when you mention wait latter tough it would be on another post, shame couldn't see inside the rooms like how a bedroom from those times look like, we always get those pictures from movies but in reality must be way different

It was a beautiful and sturdy-looking castle, the castle was also located on a plateau that allowed us to see various beautiful views of the city below. Have a nice day.

I bet it was beautiful! It's a pity that the building inside the walls isn't preserved, but after so many earthquakes, wars, battles, and weather conditions, I suppose it was impossible to do it...

hopefully the rest of the building will continue to survive so that it can be enjoyed by our children later

Thank you so much for your kind comment! I have visited a couple of old castles in Spain and none of them was this well conserved for that amount of years...
