POULTRY FARM AND WHAT YOU NEED TO ABOUT HEAT STRESS AND HOW TO TACKLE IT.

I want to use this medium to greet all great Hivers. How has been your day so far, hope you are all doing good? I'm positive minded that it's all well and fine.

I have always have this thought in my mind that it's only during the raining season that you get to work more as a Poultry Farmer because of the wet Pen ground that one needs to pack every now and then. Raining season is so stressful for me as a Farmer because of how my Pen is located and situated. The Pen is downside a sloppy low land such that when erosion comes, it usually passes through my Pen to the open part side walk immediately after my Pen. So this makes the ground to always be soaked and wetted.

As we all know that dry season always comes with dryness and a sunny patch. The heat period causes heat stress on the Broiler birds to the extent that it causes mortality. Some days ago I lost 15 birds to heat stress, it's a sunny day and I wasn't around and by the time I came in the evening some of them were already weak and their temperature have risen. They were about eighteen of them but I was able to save three out of the eighteen of them by drowning them in a cold water.

After that crazy experience, I have been trying all means to reduce the heat stress. Even if I want to make the move to raise the height of the pen, the same thing would still occur. After all the try and error, I came up with some remedies to reduce heat stress in my Pen...

  • I thought of wetting the floor of the Pen to create cool and calm environment for the birds without minding the smell it's going to bring out. This step helps to calm their body lying against the floor.

  • Another step is wetting the roofing sheets every hour. A bucket full of water will do just to reduce the heat on the roof.

  • I feed them all through the night and during the morning time but when it's after that is sunny I will withdraw their feed remaining only until when the weather becomes friendly again. As I have mentioned earlier, feed itself generates heat in their body when they consume but gets more complicated when they consume it when they are encountering heat stress.

  • Additionally, if by any chance you can ice blocks, you can break it into their drinkers so that as they drink from the cold water water it will help them to calm their body system.

  • Multivitamin can as well be used to reduce heat stress in the Poultry farm too.
