Around Iran no. 13 – Urmia Lake

In my series describing my journey through Armenia, I devoted one entire entry to the description of Lake Sevan, which is said to be one of the three great Armenian seas. The other seas are Lake Van in Turkey and Lake Urmia in Iran. It is located in the very north-west corner of Iran, very close to the border with Turkey, so when planning a trip from Iran towards Turkey, it was natural that we would visit this unusual place. Lake Urmia has an area of 5,200 square kilometers, making it the largest lake in Iran and the largest of all three Armenian lakes. Its size is not so obvious because it changes over time. It is a lake with no outflow and, as a result of long-term drought and increasing water extraction from the rivers supplying the lake, its area is decreasing from 3,900 square kilometers. The sad trend of decreasing the lake was reversed in the spring of 2019, when exceptionally intense rainfall reversed the unfavorable trends and raised the water level in the lake by as much as 62 cm, i.e. the place where we had pitched our tent was completely flooded with water. The lake is located at an altitude of 1,275 meters above sea level. The biggest curiosity about the lake is the fact that it is a salty lake with variable salinity ranging from 15 to 23 percent, and this is a lot, because it should be remembered that the saltiest lake in the world, the Dead Sea, has a salinity of 26 percent. . The changing salinity of the lake causes microorganisms to bloom in the water in summer, which is manifested by a change in the water's color to red. During our stay, the lake water also took on this shade, which further enhanced the aesthetic value of this place. After pitching the tent late in the evening, just before sunset, when the sun was shining very low on the horizon, we saw a beautiful landscape. Pozostałymi morzami są jeziora Van w Turcji oraz właśnie Jezioro Urmia w Iranie. Znajduje się ono na samym północno zachodnim rogu Iranu w bardzo bliskiej odległości od granicy z Turcją, dlatego planując wyjazd z Iranu w kierunku Turcji naturalne było, że odwiedzimy to nietypowe miejsce. Jezioro Urmia ma powierzchnię aż 5200 kilometrów kwadratowych co czyni je największym jeziorem Iranu, oraz największym z wszystkich trzech ormiańskich jezior. Jego wielkość nie jest taka oczywista, bo zmienia się w czasie. Jest to jezioro bezodpływowe i a w skutek długotrwałej suszy oraz coraz większego pozyskiwania wody z zasilających jezioro rzek, jego powierzchnia zmniejsza się z 3900 kilometrów kwadratowych. Smutna tendencja zmniejszania się jeziora została odwrócona wiosną roku 2019, kiedy to wyjątkowo intensywne opady deszczu odwróciły niekorzystne tendencje i podniosły poziom wody w jeziorze aż o 62 cm, czyli miejsce w którym mieliśmy wówczas rozbity namiot zostało kompletnie zalane wodą. Jezioro znajduje się na wysokości 1275 metrów nad poziomem morza. Największą ciekawostką związaną z jeziorem jest fakt, że jest to słone jezioro o zmiennym zasoleniu wynoszącym od 15 do 23 procent, a jest to bardzo dużo, bo należy pamiętać o tym, że najbardziej słone jezioro na świecie, czyli Morze Martwe ma zasolenie wynoszące 26 procent. Zmieniające się zasolenie jeziora sprawa, że w lecie w wodzie zakwitają mikroorganizmy, a objawia się to zmianą zabarwienia wody na czerwoną. Podczas naszego pobytu woda jeziora również przybrała taki odcień, co dodatkowo podniosło walory estetyczne tego miejsca. Po rozbiciu namiotu późnym wieczorem tuż przed zachodem słońca, gdy słońce świeciło bardzo nisko nad horyzontem, objawił nam się przepiękny krajobraz. Spokojnie stojąca woda była niczym lustro i odbijała na swojej powierzchni sąsiednie widoki. Bajowy widok.
