Movie Review: The Whale || A Touching, Yet Brilliant Film [ENG-ESP]

The word about The Whale being an "impressively captivating movie" had been around for quite a while, but it wasn't until the Oscars recently that I took a good look at it. The film has many nominations and awards, one of which is that of Brendan Fraser winning the award for best actor—even after his long time away from the industry—and it made me even more curious about what a film that had been so critically acclaimed could be about.

I saw the trailer and became even more interested in the film just by seeing the snippets of Fraser's dazzling performance. And upon watching the film for myself, I can very well attest to why this film is such an impressive film.

Charlie is an online English teacher who has an extreme case of obesity. He lives a solitary life because he is ashamed of his physical appearance. With no friends other than his nurse, Liz, who takes care of him and keeps him company sometimes, he keeps to himself and indulges in a compulsive binge-eating habit that started with the grief over his boyfriend's death.

A missionary, Thomas, meets Charlie one night with the belief that he was sent to "save" Charlie. For the same reason—to save Charlie—he visits every now and then, and even though Liz is disgruntled by this missionary and his motives, she lets him stay.

Charlie's condition is critical, so he hopes to reconnect with his estranged daughter, whom he has not seen in years, and invites her to come around. Their bond, however, isn't as smooth as he may have hoped. She turns out to resent him deeply for abandoning her at such a young age, even for a gay partner. He then resolves to find subtle ways to connect with her, like walking her through school work.

Charlie's problems take a heavy toll on those around him, yet they somehow connect them all together. He is now passionate about giving a better life to his daughter and helping her discover herself, since he cannot save himself. His daughter may, however, have some other plans—ones that include Thomas too, as she sees through him.

Apparently, everyone around Charlie have their own problems to deal with, including his daughter, Ellie, and his ex-wife.

Everyone has their life problems; some bigger than others. In some way or another, these problems may affect some people around, making things all the more complicated. This film is a touching portrayal that explores themes of isolation, faith, forgiveness, and redemption.

It is a film to really appreciate for many reasons. It presents a side to life that we do not often see in movies, considering its nature, but at the same time highlights certain issues in an educational manner.

It is a story that is not conventionally told in cinema. It isn't something that one cannot entirely enjoy but, at the same time, cannot turn away from. Many of us would normally deem it all gross, but I still found myself hooked in the film, not for what I saw but for my curiosity about what would happen next.

It's a brilliantly presented film. It touches on certain aspects of the human condition: grief, abandonment issues, and guilt. Basically, it's a sad story, but it's so well put together that it's both entertaining and educational.

Despite the film being a sort of sad one, somehow I found some parts of the film to be comical, which did the trick of alleviating one from sympathizing with the protagonist's case for a little while. It's not all a sad story from the beginning to the end, really; there were those moments of actual amusement, making it all a very realistic story to be told.

I like how each character in the film is distinctively different, different in the sense that they each have a specific personality that contributes well to the entire story, making their small number very effective still.

There were only five main characters in this film. That's far less than many other films that have done so well over the years. It is yet another proof that a good film does not require plenty of characters and actors to deliver its story. There are indeed films that have a superfluous number of characters, and one may eventually see no need for the excess. In The Whale, however, we have only five, and that was enough—enough to win an Oscar, even.

In this time in the film industry where special effects and CGI rule on top of the pyramid, it is a stunning sight to see a film that doesn't employ as much visually captivating cinematography and yet come out on top at the end of the day—even more surprising that it's a film without many settings.

This isn't to imply that the visual representation of the film is subpar. It is far from mediocre, in fact. Out of the categories of elements of the film, the cinematography may be the last on the list, as it is not the kind one would see in certain films these days. There was beauty in its simplicity...

The most interesting thing about how this film looks is how the camera is effectively used to deliver subtle yet cogent elements of the story. For example, there was a point in the film where the protagonist was going to die from food—yes, unexpectedly from food—and the way the camera moved through that scene was just too important. The camera angles worked their magic in keeping me engaged with what was happening and feeling the tension.

The film also has an accurate color theme to it, one that represents the main character himself and his pitiable situation.

If you are going to make a film with only five people and very little setting, the story must be damn good first, and secondly, the actors must be great at their jobs. The Whale didn't win an Oscar for some low-effort work. Their cast was very good.

I wanted to see for myself what made Brendan Fraser deserve the best actor in a leading role. I mean, there are so many great actors far and near. "What's special about his performance?" I thought to myself, and that's basically what landed me in front of my TV with the film playing.

There are words that cannot be said but only expressed. It takes mastery to do it the right way in the film industry as an actor. There were so many things about Fraser playing his character that made the character less of a character and more of a person in reality. One could forget that it's all a movie and that it's all prosthetics. In a few words, he did a hell of an amazing job in this film. His performance was a pillar on which the film rested.

Sadie Sink is a young actress I discovered in Stranger Things, and I have liked her since then. Her performance as Charlie's daughter was incredible. She has the potential to do exceptionally well in the future. I was glad to see her in this film. She brought her A game to the film.

Without a doubt, this is a film I would recommend to anyone. It may not exactly be the kind of film most people would be particularly drawn to—the general taste of people these days is questionable anyway—but it's a film that could become a classic.

I really would like to see more laudable films like this one, The Whale. These kinds of films that have depth in their story, acting, and everything else are much more enjoyable and appreciable for me.

Hacía tiempo que se hablaba de que La ballena era una "película impresionantemente cautivadora", pero no fue hasta la reciente entrega de los Oscar cuando le eché un buen vistazo. La película tiene muchas nominaciones y premios, uno de los cuales es el de Brendan Fraser, que ganó el premio al mejor actor -incluso después de su largo tiempo alejado de la industria-, y eso me hizo sentir aún más curiosidad por lo que podía ser una película que había sido tan aclamada por la crítica.

Vi el tráiler y me interesé aún más por la película con sólo ver los fragmentos de la deslumbrante interpretación de Fraser. Y al ver la película por mí mismo, puedo atestiguar perfectamente por qué esta película es tan impresionante.

Charlie es un profesor de inglés online que padece un caso extremo de obesidad. Lleva una vida solitaria porque se avergüenza de su aspecto físico. Sin más amigos que su enfermera, Liz, que le cuida y le hace compañía a veces, se encierra en sí mismo y se entrega a un hábito compulsivo de comer compulsivamente que comenzó con el dolor por la muerte de su novio.

Un misionero se encuentra con Charlie una noche con la creencia de que ha sido enviado para "salvar" a Charlie. Por la misma razón -salvar a Charlie- le visita de vez en cuando, y aunque Liz está disgustada con este misionero y sus motivos, le deja quedarse.

El estado de Charlie es crítico, por lo que espera reencontrarse con su distanciada hija, a la que no ve desde hace años, y la invita a acercarse. Sin embargo, su relación no es tan fluida como él esperaba. Resulta que ella le guarda un profundo rencor por haberla abandonado a una edad tan temprana, incluso por una pareja gay. Entonces él decide encontrar formas sutiles de conectar con ella, como acompañarla en sus tareas escolares.

Los problemas de Charlie afectan mucho a los que le rodean, pero de algún modo los unen a todos. Ahora le apasiona dar una vida mejor a su hija y ayudarla a descubrirse a sí misma, ya que él no puede salvarse a sí mismo. Sin embargo, puede que su hija tenga otros planes, unos planes que también incluyen a Thomas, ya que ve a través de él.

Al parecer, todos los que rodean a Charlie tienen sus propios problemas, incluida su hija, Ellie, y su ex mujer.

Todo el mundo tiene sus problemas en la vida; unos mayores que otros. De un modo u otro, estos problemas pueden afectar a algunas personas del entorno, complicando aún más las cosas. Esta película es un retrato conmovedor que explora temas como el aislamiento, la fe, el perdón y la redención.

Es una película para apreciar de verdad por muchas razones. Presenta un lado de la vida que no solemos ver en las películas, teniendo en cuenta su naturaleza, pero al mismo tiempo pone de relieve ciertos temas de una manera educativa.

Es una historia que no se cuenta convencionalmente en el cine. No es algo que uno no pueda disfrutar del todo pero, al mismo tiempo, no pueda apartar la vista. Muchos de nosotros normalmente lo consideraríamos asqueroso, pero aún así me encontré enganchado a la película, no por lo que vi sino por mi curiosidad sobre lo que ocurriría a continuación.

Es una película brillantemente presentada. Toca ciertos aspectos de la condición humana: el dolor, los problemas de abandono y la culpa. Básicamente, es una historia triste, pero está tan bien montada que resulta entretenida y educativa a la vez.

A pesar de que la película es un poco triste, de alguna manera encontré algunas partes de la película cómicas, lo que hizo el truco de aliviar a uno de simpatizar con el caso del protagonista por un rato. No todo es una historia triste desde el principio hasta el final, realmente; hubo esos momentos de verdadera diversión, haciendo que todo sea una historia muy realista para ser contada.

Me gusta cómo cada personaje de la película es distintivamente diferente, diferente en el sentido de que cada uno tiene una personalidad específica que contribuye bien a toda la historia, haciendo que su pequeño número sea aún muy efectivo.

Sólo había cinco personajes principales en esta película. Eso es mucho menos que muchas otras películas que lo han hecho tan bien a lo largo de los años. Es una prueba más de que una buena película no necesita un gran número de personajes y actores para contar su historia. De hecho, hay películas que tienen un número superfluo de personajes, y uno puede llegar a no ver la necesidad del exceso. En La ballena, sin embargo, sólo tenemos cinco, y eso fue suficiente, suficiente incluso para ganar un Oscar.

En esta época de la industria cinematográfica en la que los efectos especiales y el CGI reinan en la cúspide de la pirámide, resulta asombroso ver una película que no emplea tanta cinematografía visualmente cautivadora y que, sin embargo, al final sale vencedora; más sorprendente aún es que se trate de una película sin muchos decorados.

Esto no quiere decir que la representación visual de la película sea mediocre. De hecho, dista mucho de ser mediocre. De todas las categorías de elementos de la película, la cinematografía puede que sea la última de la lista, ya que no es del tipo que uno vería en ciertas películas hoy en día. Había belleza en su sencillez.

Lo más interesante del aspecto de esta película es cómo la cámara se utiliza eficazmente para transmitir elementos sutiles pero contundentes de la historia. Por ejemplo, hubo un momento de la película en el que el protagonista iba a morir a causa de la comida -sí, inesperadamente a causa de la comida- y la forma en que la cámara se movía en esa escena era muy importante. Los ángulos de la cámara hacían magia para mantenerme atento a lo que sucedía y sentir la tensión.

La película también tiene un acertado tema de color, que representa al propio protagonista y su lamentable situación.

Si vas a hacer una película con sólo cinco personas y muy poco decorado, la historia debe ser condenadamente buena en primer lugar, y en segundo lugar, los actores deben ser estupendos en su trabajo. La Ballena no ganó un Oscar por un trabajo de poco esfuerzo. Su reparto era muy bueno.

Quería ver por mí mismo qué hacía a Brendan Fraser merecedor del premio al mejor actor protagonista. Hay tantos grandes actores cerca y lejos. "¿Qué tiene de especial su interpretación?". pensé, y eso fue básicamente lo que me llevó a ponerme delante del televisor con la película en marcha.

Hay palabras que no se pueden decir, sólo expresar. Se necesita maestría para hacerlo bien en la industria del cine como actor. Había tantas cosas en la interpretación de Fraser que hacían que el personaje fuera menos personaje y más persona en la realidad. Uno podía olvidar que todo es una película y que todo son prótesis. En pocas palabras, hizo un trabajo increíble en esta película. Su interpretación fue un pilar sobre el que descansó la película.

Sadie Sink es una joven actriz que descubrí en Stranger Things, y desde entonces me gusta. Su interpretación de la hija de Charlie fue increíble. Tiene el potencial para hacerlo excepcionalmente bien en el futuro. Me alegró verla en esta película. Ella trajo su juego A a la película.

Sin duda, es una película que recomendaría a cualquiera. Puede que no sea exactamente el tipo de película que atraiga a la mayoría de la gente -el gusto general de la gente hoy en día es cuestionable de todos modos-, pero es una película que podría convertirse en un clásico.

Realmente me gustaría ver más películas loables como ésta, La ballena. Este tipo de películas que tienen profundidad en su historia, actuación y todo lo demás son mucho más agradables y apreciables para mí.
