Diary of a Patriotic Corper: Camera Adventures

At different points in my life, people meet and discover different colours of me. What you may know me for—which is likely writing, tech, and film reviews, if you are reading this—may vastly vary for the person next door. And at certain times, some of these things come in handy at the right time. Just like it did today.

The day before was the final day of service for my senior colleagues at this one-year National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme that I am undergoing. In essence, and as we commonly connote it here, they were "passing out." I couldn't allow anything to hinder my attendance, as I had dear friends to celebrate, and so I made it there to celebrate with them.

IMG_20240405_110611.jpg

"Olujay, you will come and snap me." I heard that statement and its variations every now and then on that day. Apparently, Olujay is known for taking good photographs with just his smartphone, as I have often heard. And as enthusiastic as I usually am about photography and videography, I didn't hesitate.

With a couple of shots here and there, I started getting questions about the kind of phone I was using. The photos were not only well-taken, but they were also really sharp and had great tones. Once again, everyone had the impression that I was a photographer. I had to be, especially since I really was not any different at our orientation camp—perhaps way more active—and I was known then for always taking good photos and videos.

That night, I was summoned to be a part of a health initiative by NYSC that would take place in a not-so-nearby community the next day. I had no idea why I was chosen, but I couldn't "disobey the clarion call." And so I showed up the next day dressed in my khaki uniform, boots, and cap, looking sharp as always. The other selected colleagues of mine did the same.

After assembly in the morning, today I was assigned cameraman duty for the event. And then it dawned on me that I was mostly asked to come for that purpose. That's what I think, anyway.

I received instructions on how to do the coverage, including the important people and activities to capture. And although the idea was sort of vague to me and was going to be laborious, I simply went on to do my thing.

IMG_20240405_123944.jpg

IMG_20240405_125719.jpg

Back and forth, I kept going around doing the job. I was excited to do it, and it reflected my enthusiasm and level of expertise to a reasonable degree. And for most of the event, people kept asking if the kind of phone I was using to take such stellar photos and videos was an iPhone or Samsung phone. To their surprise, it was just the Xiaomi Redmi Note 10 Pro they were seeing in action, and they had barely ever heard of such a model of phone.

Now, I really do not think that my phone is superior or competitive against the flagship models of Apple and Samsung. It is distantly far from it, even. However, I was 200% intentional when I picked this phone to buy and didn't care about the challenges I faced to get this particular phone. So yes, it makes me feel like I got a really good deal for a phone when people like it.

Moving on. At the end of the day, I took about 300 photos and videos for that event alone. If you guessed that I was in absolutely none of those photos and videos, you were damn right! I lived the life of a photographer by making invisible appearances in my own work. Tsk tsk.

Sadly, I wasn't prepared for the job. And now my phone feels like it ate too much and sometimes misbehaves. It's a thing that happens with Android smartphones when their storage is full. During the event, my phone kept overheating because the environment wasn't cool at all, and I had to keep circumventing my way to keep the phone stable.

IMG_20240405_122634.jpg

As is usually the case on this side of the world, we started the event really late, something around noon. And then we left late because of that. After everything, I started to consider something.

I should probably get an actual camera for myself and take gigs sometimes to add some doe to my pockets, as well as become much better at it. Covering events may not really be something I am interested in because I really don't enjoy being in crowds of people, so I'd rather experiment with other kinds of photography or just do random shots of my woman whenever. Either way, I get to do it.

What a day today was! Actually, yesterday, because this was written the day after. Without much thought, I just stopped at my usual spot to eat eba with afang and egusi soups. And of course, I chill cans of malt.

Now that I am back from this rather interesting week, it's back to the status quo with my ambitions and all. And, yes, I started with the gym this morning. My body didn't want to go, though, because I was still really slow. That's how it starts, however—showing up less and less until it completely stops—and then no more gym after a couple of days or weeks.

IMG_20240405_131007.jpg

Although my routine and plans were detered, I had a rather spontaneous and exciting week, even though it was mostly stressful. What was yours like? I was shocked to see a different post on my feed but this is a breath of fresh air; at least I can comment on this one, instead of reading like ghost, lol.

I do hope you invest in a better device so you can hone your photography skills, these shots are not bad at all, they are good ones. Forgive your device for overheating and storage issues, it is well.

The next time you go out for your eba with afang and egusi soups, don't hesitate to call me, I must drink two cans of malt on your tab, lol. But don't invite when you are going to the gym 🚶🏽‍♀️🚶🏽‍♀️

I think that, when I do get myself good camera gear, I would rather spend my time learning and exploring on my own than taking gigs. Not sure, though.

So you like eba and afang like this? You're adding two cans of malt and zero gym? Wait. Who's your doctor again?

Yes I just did. I served in Kaduna state.
Rivers state is a good one. Was it NYSC that brought you to the state or you have always stayed there?

I had always lived in the West. NYCS brought me to Rivers, and I have been exploring the North ever since.

Even when the prices of some gadgets are expensive they are worth the investment. Diversifying income is the goal✅✅

Try not to put your self under much pressure. Steady... You're doing well by showing up regularly already.

Discord, eh? Discord is often causing discord for new people. I totally feel you.

I have something in the works. I'll share when it's ready, and that should help. Meanwhile, if you ever wiggle your way around Discord, send me a DM (olujay).

You are good at what you do and it's definitely something to be proud of because it's a noble skill.

I'd be looking forward to the day when you upgrade to an actual camera, it would definitely be magical 💃🥰.

The upcoming photographer 🥳🥳🥳!
The pictures look very sharp, no doubt you are very good at taking pictures .

This is a very good skill and I encourage you to take it up to a higher level.

You can't blame the phone. 300 photos along with videos in only one phone and you expect it not to mess up??? Fear God ooo 😂

#Dreemerforlife.

Thank you o. It wouldn't have been a problem if I had been given a heads up early enough so I could prepare. But no, I had to manage with the space I had.

I may or may not explore photography a little deeper. I love doing it, though. I might just own a camera and use it for random shots. Until then, let me be following. You up and down, Sweet Nkem. 😄

Seeing this Kaki made me remember my time as a corper and all the shege they made us go through especially me as the stubborn goat and the black sheep. As they are showing me pepper, me sef I'm giving them hot hot (A story I will share on a very good day) 😂

Recently, someone that is serving there currently was gisting me that every CDs they contribute 1k for miscellaneous.

Then if you come late N500 😂.

Thank God I didn't serve now because? All that money MUST be accounted for, not all this rubbish they are doing and getting away with now.

Ps
Please what phone are using? because it is way clearer than the iphone X I had wanted to buy.

PSS
That Eba and Afang plus Egusi is doing me longa longa. In the #dreemerforlife spirit, when next you are going, please let a fellow #dreemer tag along.

😂🤣😂🤣 in our time, it's only when new corpers are coming in we were asked to contribute money for their transportation and 3 days feeding.

We later discovered that these things were already provided by the local government and they were just using us to cash out.

Make I go check the price of the phone for Jumia

You are calling me for Eba, Afang and Egusi soup every day but I don't respond?? This lie is not necessary 😒

For the phone I saw the 13 of it and 12. The reviews I'm getting for the 12 is disappointing so I'd go for the 13.

And for the call log, don't worry on a very good day, everyday for the thief one day for the owner of the house 😒

Bummer. They don't make phones as great as they used to anymore, sadly.

Who come be thief and who be owner?

I'll just have to visit the physical shops so I can make a choice and avoid blind buying. I don't want to be told story that touches the heart.

Don't worry, time shall tell who is the thief and who is the owner of house 😂🤣

Ewee. Stories that touch in this economy? God abeg.

What I know is, my mother always told me that I'll be a landlord and owner in the future. I don't now know who the thief is between...
