Birth of Studious Jay

Going through pages was a tedious task for me as a kid. Attending to my assignments was never something I looked forward to either. I would rather sit in front of a television and watch my favourite shows for as long as I could back then. Consequentially, I was never the brightest student or anything close.

In junior secondary school, how I prepared for examinations and tests was so wrong. I would only wait, not just until the day of the examination but even two or three hours before. That is when I would begin my "la cram la pour."

"Business studies is the study of business, demand, and supply..." Only to forget so quickly what I had just memorised.

At some point, when I had only just started the first term in senior secondary school, I was going to change schools. It was abrupt. In a matter of days, I was preparing to transfer to the new school. What I didn't know for a while was that it was going to be a military school—a boy's only school, for that matter.

On the first day of school, I sat close to the back. I could see almost everyone. During the first class I experienced, I noticed something rather intriguing. When the teacher asked a question, there were usually many hands in the air. That was a lot more than I was used to seeing. And, unsurprisingly, my own hands weren't in the air. I didn't even understand what they were talking about.

When that term ended, I had the worst result that I had ever gotten in my life. I had so many reds. Wait. I meant that I had so many F9s: physics, chemistry, mathematics, geography, and further mathematics. It wasn't funny, and so I knew that I had to do something about it.

I enrolled in extra lessons with a couple of teachers for certain subjects, and then I hoped that things would get better. I wouldn't say that I was wrong for hoping, because the lessons actually helped me in some ways, but the improvement could have happened without the lessons. One faithful day, however, everything changed.

Fed up by my poor performance, despite all the extra money that she had to pay, my mother was going to revoke a lot of the privileges I was enjoying. Thinking about it all now, I don't think that she meant the words she said then. I mean, one of them was that she was going to take me out of school and leave me under the bridge to work. Either way, those words were effective. And that was in senior secondary school.

I started to work a little harder, develop a new and improved mindset, and stay more concentrated on school work. Fast forward to many years afterwards, when I was already at the university and scored really well in the external examinations I took.

That new behaviour I developed stuck with me, and so I continued being serious when I started out at the university I recently graduated from. In a matter of years, I went from being a really nonchalant student to one that graduated with solid results for the degree of B. Eng. Mechatronics Engineering.

With plans of going even further with my academics, I have it in mind to be diligent and hardworking, even more than I have ever been, so I can finish with a distinction. That's how much of a studious person I am now as a student.

I was quite the opposite of you while growing. I loved books. Any material I could find, I devoured and my results were a testament of that.
And somewhere along the line, in high school, I slacked. By my first year in Senior high, I sat up(thanks to my brother) and that was the very best of result that I ever had made.

When I think of then, I don't think of the results so much. Just remembering how excited I got to study gives me all the chill. Until date, I can roll out the words from most of my notes without racking my brain. It was amazing. I'm not so anymore now. But I'm trying.

she was going to take me out of school and leave me under the bridge to work.

This is hilarious. I know this parent that told his child that he was going to withdraw him from school and enroll him to learn mechanic. Boy is only about 8 years old. And somehow, it works some magic, even for just a few days😀

You got excited to study? I don't think I have ever really felt that. I just learned to do what I had to do when I had to. I wonder, though, what do you think may have caused your enthusiasm to wane? It was thrilling for you to study before.

I think as kids, our minds imagine the wildest things and that can make us believe things. I mean, I most certainly wouldn't subject my children to such life unless it was totally and absolutely necessary.

How about you share gour experience with us in the community, eh? Im

Yes, studying is exciting. In the beginning though, it's not that way. What happened is, since I began to read just when academic work resumed, it wasn't very taxing. Made the work all easy.
I'm currently at that phase with some of my courses. The others are...just there.

As for my enthusiasm, a couple factors contributed to why it went downhill. Valid reasons.

How about you share gour experience with us in the community, eh? Im

Of course, I will. I'm on it.

I understand. What are you studying?

Of course, I will. I'm on it.

Do you think you can use InLeo to post this time?

What are you studying?

Medical laboratory science

Do you think you can use InLeo to post this time?

Uhm, i do not think so. I have quite some limitations for now.

Is it not you? I believe. And that under the bridge bit made me laugh so much. That threat came from inside pain ... we children know how best to upset our parents.

Inside pain oh... And there were so many more privileges that she was going to take away. My only option was to brace up and do well. Although I think that she may not have done the things she said, actually. But the threat worked wonders anyway.

I must applaud mum's tactics in bringing out the genius in you. If not fir that threat, we would not have a mechanotronics in the making... that's you by the way😁

I believe that the gene of greatness was already in you, it only needed to sprout are mum was the catalyst. I'm so sure that she's the projdest one to have you, I mean the rebirthed you

Yes, she birthed me. 😂

I may have just remained complacent and nonchalant if she had not been serious with me. I am thankful for her in my life.

When are we seeing your entry in the community, madam Becky?

Lol, I just submitted my entry and please don't make joke of my grammar cos I formed it myself. Oxford really can't stand me, I form words that it would never dream of 😂😂.

Cheers to your mum Jay, she is the real superhero

Lol sounds like when I threatened my little brother that if he ever became a nuisance I would pay Navy men to flog him😂😂😂😂 the fact that he believed me was surprising and right now I am still wondering how I would have carried that out😂😂😂

From all the stories I have heard about your mum, she must be so funny😂😂

😂

How could you have been so wicked, this IB? What I am more curious about than how you would have carried it out as how that really worked on him. Lmao. Did he ever forgive you or is he still too young to realise?

My mother cracks me up a lot when we talk. We're actually best friends.

I see how the statement from your mum changed the narrative for you. Isn't that interesting? From a non challant attitude student to a studious student who later became brain himself. One thing I have come to believe is that we all have the potential to be what we aspire to be. We just have to work on ourselves when the need be

That's actually very true, and that's what I managed to do. I was determined to make my Mom proud; I try to do that in everything I do.

Surely, you would have your experience. I'd like to read yours soon. Thank you for the doot, Sweet Nkem.

This is one habit I have fought to stop in my life, Even up to my university days I still read a night to the exam, or if the exam is in the afternoon I will read that morning. It really a bad habit I’m happy to hear your mum word encouraged you. Keep up to the new you it better that way.

Usually, one would like to be all studious right from the beginning of the semester, but things just happen and then we end up reading at the last hour. I totally get.

Yes my friend you are right business is not without demand and supply. That is why capital is required. It is very important to study it. May God always bless you with all abilities.

Some mothers have a way of making their kids learn and become serious, imagine she had not told you she will let you work under the bridge I doubt you will ever be serious.

Yeah, true. I was mostly moved by her disappointment and frustration, and so I made up my mind to make her proud instead.

Nice one. You demonstrated that no one can really change a person, the change has to come from within. If you weren't willing to change you would have dared your mom and not even try to pass at all. I am happy for you, well done. But which one is Mechatronics Engineering again? let me go and read it up on google. Thank you for a motivating read.

Bullseye! To truly change oneself, one has to do it themselves. And that's exactly what happened to me.

Mechatronics engineering is basically about automated systems, AI, and robotics.

Beautiful break from all the struggle you went through. I guess your mums threat paid off 😁 You found a way through it all. Congratulations 🎉

I did find a way through it, and it helped me for a long time. How else would I have gone through engineering? Thanks to some external ginger from my Mom.

Moms sure know the right words to use for their children to sit up. Good your mom came up with strategy of depriving you some privileges which prompted seriousness in you.

It mostly came from a place of frustration, and that's why my mom was like that to me. But it worked. I wanted to make her proud, and so I tried harder.
