Practical Over Theory - My Idea For Education System

For one who has gone through low level and high level schooling, both in private and public school, I think I know enough to say that Nigerian schools are lacking in a lot of ways that removing just one thing may not be do much for the system.

Regardless of that, there's always a step to everything and I think if I'm able to remove one thing and add one to the school system, students will have a better school experience than they do now. Although there will be other things that needs to be given attention to.

There are a lot of things I'd want to remove and a lot I want to add but I'll be focusing on the ones that affected me more as a student when I was still schooling.

As an aspiring doctor student, I've been in the science classes and departments all my school life and if there's one thing every science student needs most importantly, it is more than theory teachings. Doing practicals and exercising on what had been taught in writing is the best way to help a student be better at what he or she aspires to know.

Well, that is one thing I lacked as a student. Maybe it's just the schools I attended or it's a general issue. All the schools I went to, had little or no equipment for practical sections. Even when there are exams for practical, they made us give formulated figures to pass. We didn't get to do real practicals to help us understand what we are studying for.

If I were to remove one thing and add something, I'll remove too much theory teachings and add more practicals to the school system.

Even for non science students like Law or literature, they need practicals to try their learning abilities if they are doing well enough to go into the labour market after graduation. What happens when we find a science student in his final year finding it hard to use an equipment he or she is supposed to know well enough how to use.

During my IT period, I can still remember how the supervisor formulated figures for hospital results with the excuse that she is well experienced and know how to figure things out without using machines or equipments. It's funny that she does that without considering the students who lack the experience and needs to use every equipment they could get in making their results.

I won't blame the teachers or supervisors, it is the school system that seem to put less importance to the practical aspects of education I blame. The school system would be much better if teachers are made to say less in class and just focus more on showing students what they were trying to say.

There are a lot of practical ways to teach and make students study life much easier, the school system needs to know that and adopt as many as possible. One of the many ways will be having good practical equipments for each subjects or courses.

Even though this addition would cost more money from students/parents, I think it's better to spend so much for good results than spend average and get almost nothing.

We are on the same page. I suffered in school because we were not taught practicals. In fact, those teachers/lecturers can't practicalized what they teach in theory. We were half baked. If you can't further to learn how to do things on your own, you become an unqualified graduate. More emphasis should be laid on practicals.

Exactly! Just the theory teachings were frustrating until I figured out my own way to understand better 🥲

It is quite obvious that most Nigeria schools especially the government owned institutions lack faculties and tools for learning, it also affected me as a student studying mass communication. The only thing we were thought is news gathering and all in theory but no practicals. We had a studio in my school then but it was less functional and very tiny.

At the end of my first year, I went for my ciwes in a broadcast station as a polytechnic student, it took be by surprise when I saw different equipment used that I was not aware of, thanks to that I was able to acquire a lot of knowledge about tools used in my profession if not the only thing I will know is the theoretical aspects of it.

You see, a lot of students have same experiences in their different study courses. It's really sad.

Yeah we do, we just hope it gets better for the coming generation.

This practical aspect is so bothersome that I'm even considering my child not to do a science course in Nigeria, I'm as reminds me of a physics student whose dad asked him to fix their generator at home that had minor issue but he was just looking like beans😂😂 we laughed so hard that day, but for a fact his dad was right, Nigeria theory packed educational system caused this.

Ahhh that must have been so hilarious and embarrassing to the father, see what our schools have caused 🤦‍♀️

You can't be perfect in practical use without theoretical knowledge. You have to need the first theory very well and then you need to apply it practically. I agreed, the theory course should be less and our focus will be on a practical mentor.

Yeah, both are needed but practical is needed most, especially for science courses.

It's sad that we do very little or no practicals for courses that requires lots of it. I studied microbiology but we only had very few good compound microscopes in the department. In the whole country I doubt if we even have any transmission electron microscope (TEM).

I was fortunate to learn most of what I was taught in school during my IT days, I did it in National Veterinary Research Institute in Jos which had so many facilities and members of staff who were more than willing to teach us.

I won't completely blame the lecturers because most of them don't even know how to carry out most of the practical either due to lack of facilities or due to nonchalant attitude towards it.

I presented a result from an analysis I did using real-time PCR my supervisor got upset and told me to repeat the work just because she didn't have the slightest idea on how qPCR works. I had to call the Dr in charge where I did the lab work to explain to her because she was not ready to listen to me.

Anyone who can formulate a medical result is just being evil in my own opinion. The fact that you think you have years of experience and assumes that the result is always the same only indicates the person has not yet fully understood what research is all about. Imagine giving a false result just because one assumes the result is "always" the same, I see it as indirect murder.

Haha the one about your supervisor is really funny, she had to make you do it over because she doesn't know about it... Too bad.

Don't mind those so called experienced personnels, we knew very well as IT students that we must not learn that rubbish act they were displaying. 😅

Nigeria's education system is majorly based on theory and most times not useful theories but useless ones that are not relevant in the labour market.

Smh... theory has overtaken practical, and this is why Poly is a bit better because, unlike university, they engage in practical with Siwess.

Someone: Leave talk and do practical.

Nigeria University: No

I totally agree with you on this. We need more of practicals to theory.

With the way the educational system is designed, it seems we are just recycling and sometimes most students just read to pass and not because they fully understand what they are to do.

I also think these are some of the reasons why I am not seeing any form of development in the country.

I once attended a workshop where I learned about "student-based learning". It entails allowing the students to think for themselves instead of just putting the words in their mouth and just making them cram everything just to pass.

We have a long way to go and I hope for the sake of future generations, SOMETHING is been done.

Thank you for sharing.

You hit the hammer on the head. This is one major lack most schools I have encountered face.
If only changes could be made by the government and school authority, what a beauty that will be.
