Ecency's Retreat from Hive Curation: Decentralization Under Scrutiny

In the world of decentralized blockchain platforms, Hive stands out as a beacon of promise, advocating for inclusivity, decentralization and community-driven governance. However, recent events surrounding the Hive app Ecency have sparked debate about the true nature of decentralization within the platform. If you have been around long enough you would know by now that Hive isn’t as decentralized as it is made out to be.

Sure no one can remove you or silence you… Wait they can… You can be removed in a Fork but the centralised guardians don’t even need to go that hard, all they need to do is downvote you until your account is muted. Good luck returning from that.

You’ll also notice that there are many accounts that utilise the Hive DHF which is similar to the Ethereum Improvement Proposals and a governance system that many chains have. But the Hive one has a major issue in that it continues to provide massive amounts of HBD to projects that really don’t contribute that much or work in the way they say. There is no one keeping it in check and it is open to scamming. Which some would probably say it currently is. With many proposals being funding thousands if not more for no accountability or reporting on their projects and how they are benefiting the broader chain.

Ecency Succumbs to Centralised Criticism

@ecency , a popular application within the Hive ecosystem, recently succumbed to pressure from Hive critics and made a significant change by removing the ability to utilize points earned from using Ecency to call in the curation account. This decision has reverberated across various Hive communities, raising questions about the platform's commitment to decentralization and the autonomy of its projects.

Curation holds a pivotal role within the Hive ecosystem, serving as a mechanism to increase community participation and reward authors for their contributions. Many Hive communities rely on curation as a means to foster engagement and distribute rewards fairly among content creators. However, Ecency's retreat from providing upvotes through curation points has left a void in this aspect.

In response to these developments, there have been calls for greater transparency and accountability within the Hive ecosystem. Community members are advocating for more inclusive decision-making processes that prioritize the voices of all stakeholders and uphold the principles of decentralization.

@themarkymark is an account that you can find in discord servers often raising the disparity of the Hive DHF and the power mismanagement of the chain where many are raising the same concerns.

Hive Needs Reform Or The Future Is Opaque

Moving forward, the Hive community faces the challenge of reconciling its ideals of decentralization with the realities of governance and power dynamics. It is imperative for stakeholders to engage in constructive dialogue and work towards solutions that uphold the integrity of the platform while fostering a truly decentralized ecosystem where diverse voices are heard and valued.

Ecency's retreat from providing upvotes through curation points sheds light on the complexities of decentralization within the Hive ecosystem. The incident underscores the need for greater transparency, accountability, and inclusivity in decision-making processes to ensure that Hive remains true to its foundational principles in the face of external pressures and internal dynamics.

As someone who has been on Hive for 6 years and have a similar experience where I was accused of “earning too much” when other accounts were earning more daily than I and producing less quality articles, works and contributions them me is ridiculous. STEEM was known as a “Circle Jerk” where Hive is starting in some aspects to look like a “Jerk Circle”

If Hive Want's To Be Web3 Than it Needs To Be WEB3

If Hive truly want’s to move forward to claim the mantel of being a WEB3 project and continue to attract new users to foster growth. Safeguards need to be established and a consensus needs to be reached not based on stake but on numbers. Many other chains have moved away from the person with the biggest bag wins as they know that that is not decentralisation, it is centralisation. While many of these large accounts on Hive today profited from bid bots or pre mined stakes, the field for new innovation is narrowed and the risk to investment is great due to them.

Hive needs urgent reform and what happened to Ecency, showcases that.

Can you link me to a source that proves Ecency phased out their Curation by Points system? (I just feel that this post is lacking in sources/links.)

It's not removed (yet) from the web version of the website. But it's interesting that happened. Hmmmm....

Its removed from their mobile app but you can use boost+ to get a hp delegation instead now.

They will update the website soon. But even if you try to boost within the website, your points will get returned...

Hmmm... Got it.

The Boost+ idea sounds really interesting to be honest.

Ye I know. But it will take away from their curation rewards + the rewards the give people who delegate to them, is going to be less x)

I wonder how will they sustain it, or if it's even meant to be sustainable at all...

You can now use your points to gain a delegation from Ecency. 200hp for 1500 points at the monent..

But the more people who utilize this more less curation rewards + the less liquid hive goes to the delegatee, not sure this was a good idea to do for them.

How long is the delegation period for? 200HP isn't much but it might add upto $1 if you hold it long enough

7 days x) For 1500 Point and 30 days for 6000 points.

Another one bites the dust.
Next up, curation gangs.
Good for the members, bad for the rest of us.
