Newbies Initiative Task 3 - Hive Keys And Security

We are going more deeper and it is making more sense in the newbies initiative program as learning never cease. I would like to thank the entire team @hive-learners and @newbies-hive for the growth and support acquired so far.

Here is my entry into the third task and the task goes thus;

Make a summary of what you learnt from the tutorial post
In your opinion, what are the best ways of keeping your keys safe?
How do you check your recovery account and what process is needed to recover an account?

Hive security is all about been careful, intentional, about your hive account and the way you use it especially as a newbie. Normally you alone should have access to your account but then anything could come in the way. Therefore the security measures was put in place for this purpose.

There are 5 different hive keys;

• Memo key; Least powerful. Used to send and read private messages. Considering the functions of the rest keys make this one to be less powerful.

• Posting key; is needed to publish posts, comments, follow other accounts, upvote, reblog. Always required whenever you change your device.

• Active key; This is required to power up or power your HP. To power up your post to 100%. HBD conversion and voting for a witness.

• Owner key; is more or less the most powerful key on hive blockchain. It is used to reset and recover other keys. Needed for account recovery in the event of loss of account. Also used to retrieve your master key.

• Master key; can be used to recover your passwords incase you lose any of the other keys. It is used to recover other keys. The key is normally found on the hive registration file and not on hive wallet.

Trustee And Key Security

A trustee is best needed when your account is hacked. Definitely there will be the need to get back your account. So here, a trustee is needed. Trustee is another hive account that is attached to your account. So its important for your trustee to be on hive and it's impossible for your trustee not to have an account on hive.

Trustee account is needed to retrieve a lost account. There is also an option to change the trustee account on your profile to someone who you probably know. This is because it make things easier for you by just calling the person on phone in an event hacking event.

Safeguarding one's key in this advance tech era we are in is so easy. While there is a number of ways to do that, unfortunately some people might still be unable to do that. This is probably due to their unawareness about mobile security issues.

However a good way to keep keys safe is by the use of your drive account. Some people do not still know this. But anyone who has a gmail address, has a drive account. There is a way google linked many of their mobile application to one single gmail address which save lots of stress. And this is enough for anyone to safe his keys. That way, it wouldn't matter if you have your keys saved offline to your device or not. Provided they are contained in one file. This is only one method out of many others.

Account recovery process

Both the recovery of account and changing of trustee is done from the hive recovery site. Normally there is three options of the homepage of the recovery site. The process is pretty once someone lands on the page.

To recover account, it is required to just click the recover account button. Then the system will ask for the account you want to recover, a new password, and other information. Your new owner key will be provided after a successful filling of the form from the first stage. It is this new owner key that will now be sent to your trustee to proceed.

To wrap it up, always be careful with your hive keys in anything and everything you do on the chain.
