THAT ONE NICKNAME I DIDN'T SEE COMING

avatar

There are different inspirations behind individuals having nicknames. It could be due to profession, career and personal interest and preference. Answering the questions if I have a nickname is a question I will answer with full excitement. I do have a nickname and this nickname has given me wild recognition in my department I didn't expect. Normally, people adopt nicknames for themselves for various reasons. I'm not the type that would just wake up one day and adopt a name nickname for myself.

Getting one was so unexpected but it was something I couldn't refuse as many loved it and kept addressing me by it. I got the nickname "Professor" in my first year at the University. I was nicknamed "professor" because of one particular subject I was very good at and my expertise in others too.

Source

During the first year, one of our core courses was a foreign language course, "FLF112" was the course code while Introduction to French Language was the course title. That was my first time taking French language seriously because failing it meant writing again until you pass it. I knew I had to be serious, two thirds of us were not conversant with this language, understanding it was a very difficult task for us. Some had to undergo private lessons, others had to dedicate extra time to learning it.

I was so good at the course like I had visited a French speaking country before. I tried my best to avoid any form of distraction in the class once the lecture was ongoing, I learned beyond what had been taught in the previous classes and this gave me knowledge to answer questions in class whenever a question is thrown to us by the course lecturer. Seeing how good I was in French made one of my course mates begin calling me "professor" and immediately others heard it, they followed suit and that name almost made many forget my real name.

I am still bearing the nickname from first year till today. What baffles me is that even after graduation, any of my course mates that see me still address me by that nickname. I wouldn't want to change the nickname for any reason because it's a nickname I love so much. I mean it speaks of positivity and the motivation behind it was because of my academic excellence. Also, my real name is Mary and in my department, we had up to three persons bearing Mary. Being the only one with that nickname distinguished from those sharing my real name with me.

Again, another reason I wouldn't be changing the nickname is because it is a name that gives me identity and recognition. Since everyone calling me by the nickname is doing so because of my academic excellence and not in a sarcastic way or in an opposite interpretation and with it aligning with my desired reputation, it's a nickname I'm proud to be called because the name helped me in my academic journey. I was so serious with my studies because I wouldn't want to be answering the name in the opposite way. The closeness, sense of warmth and affection shared with all my course mates was as a result of this name.

                    THE END

I too would never want to change my nickname if it was Professor 😂

That's really a cool one I must say.

I remember also taking the class , French language in my secondary school but the moment was short-lived as I didn't continue when I entered the university but I did love the course then too

You made a very good observation here. Some people get a nickname that is given to them out of sarcasm. Ironically, some get called mathematician when in reality, they are very poor with numbers.

Yours is a true representation of your excellence and I find it cool and heartwarming. Hehe. Well Done, Prof.

My dear oo. I really tried my best to keep the good image from my year one till the end. Imagine answering "processor" and I'm having "C" or "D" when the result is published.

In such case, many will call me the name just for fun, some in a sarcastic way. But I refused to let that happened and I'm very proud of myself for that building my reputation. Also, my expertise in that course boosted my self esteem to 95% as many ran to me to put them through so as they can pass the course without resitting for it twice or thrice.

Thanks so much @kenechukwu97 for your kind words on my post. You too have joined in calling me the nickname. I love that, same thing @jjmusa2004 did this morning and I felt a butterfly in tommy as I read his comment.
