Official Beta Launch of our Site!

Developing something like the @magnetbank on HIVE creates a lot of choices. Should we do a token? Is there money to be made? Surely there is time and development costs, but we had to make a decision upfront if this was going to come with a token scheme or not.

And at least for now, we chose not. Other than your gracious support on these posts from @magnetbank, we have no monetization strategy around HIVE or the reward pool, although we do think that something like this could be a benefit to HIVE over time.

Today, we want to invite all HIVE users not only to try it out, but to express their opinions on what we are doing.

Check us out at PsyberSects.Com!

So we are all set up on the domain PsyberSects.Com, and one of the big first questions we get is - Is this related to PsyberX?

@PsyberSects is a DBA for a dev team that has built several things for @PsyberX related to Myria. It has also launched the MYRIANODE token. The domain was reserved by the INCOME Synergy Fund - but never used. To keep dev costs low, we decided to use a domain that we already had access to, and this seemed to us that it was the best one.

So no, @magnetbank has nothing to do with @psbyerX, except that we have reached out to the same INCOME Synergy Fund team to help us with some of the particular details, and this domain was one that @ecoinstant had available and seemed workable, at least in Beta.

How is this related to HIVE?

It used to be that you had to download a torrent file to get your computer to know where to look for a torrent. The technology has improved and now this can be done with links, no need to risk anything in a download. These links are just bits of information, and can easily be stored inside customjson data structures in the blocks of HIVE, just like @podping is doing for Podcasting 2.0.

We have identified a censorship resistant group of people known as the torrenting community that has worked really hard over the last 20 years against censorship, and we are bringing them into the HIVE community - and they don't even know it yet. It should be fun times in the weeks and years ahead.

We are working on many features, and one of them is that of shareable links. Take a look at this recent movie review to get a glimpse of how this might be used in the future on HIVE's social side - including possible synergy with existing communities and tribes.

image.png

By creating dynamic pages for each file hash, we have created two shareable links, one generated using the title and one generated using the hash.

image.png

Any HIVE user can add a torrent by clicking Add Magnet, and the interface will assist you in broadcasting the correct customjson. Make sure you pick your category correctly, while we are testing functions to recategorize magnets, we are not looking to do a bunch of janitorial work at this phase.

When we ask you to bug test below, miscategorizing files is not what we mean - just to make this clear.

image.png

Currently we are ready for more significant testing by a wider variety of users. If this sounds up your alley, besides giving us a vote and a reblog, consider submitting some magnet links to the HIVE chain through our webapp.

Click buttons, test functions, and generally 'try to break it' as the tester motto goes. This would be very helpful to us at this stage, so sharing this post to get it in front of more eyes is also quite helpful.

A new Adventure awaits!

Very cool idea and something I'm happy to support here :)

I've actually been adding a "lucky number of the day" to all my movie reviews since 2016, those are actually magnet hashes :P

Shared the post, will have a play around and I'm looking forward to see this develop further.

Future feature requests:

I'll add the user page with torrent by user, it's mostly done already, the filter in the nav does work if you put a user name in the search.

@ausbitbank I added the user profile, should do what you asked. I'll see about the comments suggestion.

This is amazing, how something like this hasn't been shared and prominently featured in the hive community yet, while we have big trending votes about a supposed DHF that benefits almost no users outside of witness, congratulations on the project.

I like it. I wish you every success.

That being said, I note a principle of physics is that equations work in both directions. Every speaker is a microphone, and every monitor is a camera. If photons or soundwaves going in can push electrons out the other side, then electrons going in can push photons or soundwaves out the other side.

"We have identified a censorship resistant group of people known as the torrenting community that has worked really hard over the last 20 years against censorship, and we are bringing them into the HIVE community..."

It is notable that the torrenting community is censorship resistant because it faces censorship. Bringing that censorship resistant community into Hive also brings that censorship to Hive. I point this out because on Hive censorship is free. Downvotes require only powered up tokens be possessed by the downvoting account, and aren't expended by downvotes, which negatively impact both the income and reputation of the recipient of downvotes.

In the event entities seeking to censor torrents grasp how Hive works, substantial downvotes could well result. I hope involved parties are not negatively impacted, and provide this information so that it can be considered in advance of any such potential.

Thanks!

Solid point.

How do you think the censorship that they face will impact the Hive community at large?

Well, if they understand how Hive works, all they need to do is drop a hunk of cash on powered up Hive, and start flagging.

Which ironically, is very good and bad for the system lol.

Mostly bad. Hive only has a far more limited number of witnesses than other chains, making it far easier to censor if big players become upset with activities on the blockchain.

An immutable public blockchain makes it dead easy for authorities to track who's using this.

That's true. Theoretically it probably wouldn't take much to put pressure on a majority of witnesses either.

That majority is not a large number, as it is a feature of the Hive blockchain to use a small number of witness to achieve it's four second transaction validation consensus.

Bitcoin, the largest chain of them all has (at time of writing) 16843 nodes, where Hive has 100 nodes and only the top 20 doing the active validation, with the remainder being backup. So it would not take much pressure to influence the network.

Cast your mind back to the issues when Justin Sun attempted to take over the chain. He was only exercising stake, and not using the intimidation of police violence, arrest, jail and asset confiscation, all of which the state has at it's disposal.

Yes absolutely. The issue with Bitcoin is getting all of the people to agree to change. As numbers increase, security increases but getting everyone to agree on software updates also increases in difficulty.

Flagging what though? The only relevant thing they could target would be magnetbank announcement posts, the actual hashes are just custom json transactions which can't be flagged or censored at all..

Folks are flagged plenty for no reason I can ascertain, and for pretty obvious reasons, alla time here.

I recall no DV mechanism on the discord clone Peakd gave us a peek at recently. That might be a good place to announce things. I simply wanted to point out that attack surfaces would be easily attacked on Hive, and that should be kept in mind.

I agree with @valued-customer, this will bring unwanted attention to the network.

Marketing cuts both ways. Some have said that no publicity is bad publicity.

Others yet, might say that creating a distribution platform for copyrighted content onto an immutable blockchain record, linking it to users and then monetizing said distribution would be unwise at best, illegal at worst.

You'd better rethink this one. As @nyxlabs said, an immutable public blockchain makes it dead easy for authorities to track who's using this. You'll be top on the list.

It sounds like you think using this is illegal! You might be interested in this political treatise that is very hard to find - disappeared even - and it has nothing to do with IP.

I meant things like "Dungeons and Dragons" and the "Tetris" movie. They're even in the thumbnail! If you reward people tokens for sharing/seeding this kind of stuff, then you are very much deriving unsanctioned value from somebody elses work / intellectual property, which yes, is illegal.

If you want to use torrents to share literature, movies, music etc. that is from the public domain (e.g. older than 72 years without a renewed copyright claim) or if you want to use it to backup your own files or works then that's fine.

But you fully know that people will use it to pirate porn, series, games and movies. So what's the point of this discussion? This isn't about censorship, it's about common sense.

No one is being rewarded for seeding, no one is being rewarded for anything here except our words. And if we didnt talk about it there would be no words to reward.

When I vote your comment, am I sanctioning any behavior? How is it different from when you vote my post?. There is a link in there but I dont see any monetization of copyright material 🤔

Those that are seeding aren't earning anything; I'm just sharing a link or 'lucky number' as some might say.

That entire post is about how you didn't wanna pay 20 bucks for the DnD movie and then instead proceeded to torrent it because the streaming service was region-locked. Furthermore you continue by explaining how you did it and that others should do it and what method they can use.

Since it's on Hive it's also indirectly monetized and you are promoting the place that leads to it.

Just sayin' dawg.

¯_(ツ)_/¯

PS:
I thought the movie was pretty decent too.

It's not whether we consider it illegal, it's whether international media corporations and their government guard dogs do. A blockchain isn't some magical get of jail free card that protects you, especially if you are openly advertising what you do.

Cool in theory.
In practice the rather blatant piracy is gonna cause a lot of problems.

Just my 2 cents.
