Making Memories. Finding Treasures. (Market Friday)

market_friday_making_memories_finding_treasures.jpg

I came across the Market Friday community quite by accident when @dswigle commented on a post of mine here and invited me to submit a post. Of course I said, sure thing, I'll do it! But I have not been able to attend a market in the past week, so what to do?

mmm... so I had a thought... maybe I'll dig out some memories of previous markets that I have attended. And dig I did ❣️

When I was a child my parents would frequent the local village markets as something to do outdoors on the weekends with the family. This included the main Saturday craft market just outside of town and the smaller flea market held in its centre. My siblings and I would follow in tow.

So this is a post really about Market Friday that for me in my childhood, always happened on Saturdays 😂

We lived out in the countryside, away from the bright lights of the city and the local markets were a place to chill out in the community, grab a nice outdoor breakfast on the weekend and use ones eye to go in search of the elusive bargain.

I usually went with a clear idea in mind of what I was looking for, be it a specific book from the throngs of the little pop-up second hand book 'stores', a music cassette, trinket or something interesting to adorn the walls of my bedroom.

Three memories stand out very clearly for me.

The first was my hunt for a copy of Jonathan Livingston Seagull written by Richard Bach. My mom had a copy and I was desperate to have my own. I had read it a few times and had fallen in love with both the story and the author.

I remember searching through a few tables stacked feet high with books before coming across a tiny little table under a tree right near the food stands. And there in the shade, sheltered from the sun by the leafy branches above, I found my copy! It cost all of 10 cents! Bargain. I was filled with joy!

After Jonathan Livingston Seagull,I fell in love with Richard Bach's works and one by one added each successive novel to my personal library. I still have them all to this day 💗

The blurb on the back:

People who make their own rules
when they know they're right...
people who get a special pleasure out
of doing something well (even if
only for themselves) ... people who know
there's more to this whole living
thing than meets the eye: they'll be
with Jonathan Seagull all the way.
Others may simply escape into a
delightful adventure about freedom
and flight.

I did both.

On a second journey to the market I was fortunate enough to pick up a copy of the Jonathan Livingston Seagull LP replete with Neil Diamond's narration of the book and overlaid with hauntingly beautiful music throughout. This too, I still have today.

And finally, a little copper plaque that I discovered on one of our journeys. It meant a lot to me then and means a lot to me now. I took it home and asked my Mom if I could hang it in our entrance hall. Everyday thereafter, it was one of the first things I saw when I walked through the front door of our family home. I feel like it was priming me for the rest of my life. When my Mom passed away, and my dad packed up their home to move, he returned it to me.

God, grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change,
courage to change the things I can,
and wisdom to know the difference

Words to live by indeed.

These are my market treasures from my childhood and I enjoyed sharing them with you.

I think that last part is the creed for AA and I've seen tokens/coins with it on them. Great write up!

Thank you so much for stopping by @enginewitty. Yes, in later years I came to realise the significance of the creed and its use by AA. I was oblivious to the connection at the time. I have not had any personal contact with AA but I find that the creed resonates for general living too.

I love seeing your childhood market treasures and this is a totally great post for Market Friday.

I liked to read as a child, but I didn't grow to LOVE it till after my teens. Of course I read the normal things you read through daily life and school, but not so much books. That all came later.

I love the copper plaque. A good life quest to follow.

Thank you @jacey.boldart. I have always loved to read, as far back as I can remember, and I am so grateful for this love that I have for books. I am so pleased that you find a great joy in reading too. What brought you to this love of yours after your teens? And that copper plaque...special indeed.

I don't really have an event or the such that changed. I guess during my childhood and teens, I just didn't sit down quietly that long to spend hours and hours in books. Sure I checked out library books all through school and the such and read them, but it just wasn't my focus or priority to do it. There was always some other fun waiting for me to run off and do ! After I left home though, one of my sisters that had many, many books shared hers with me and I guess I had slowed down a bit and found more time to stop and enjoy them. Still my reading patterns and choices have been eclectic along the way.

lol to be fair, the book felt kinda manifested and that was a special moment 💕 and the LP was a bonus. The plaque ...I wasn't specifically looking for it ... but was on the lookout for something for my room and then I saw it and it really spoke to me and being copper I thought it would look great alongside my folks copper bits in the entrance hall to our home ... so thought...let's share the love of the message❣️But yes...fortuitous...or more... ;-) I have been particularly lucky with books and parking spaces funnily enough ...even my other half now says...do that thing you do with the parking spaces and find me one 🤣

That is so cool that you still have your finds from your childhood. I love books and second hand stores, especially when I was a kid. Sifting through peoples discards always fascinated me, how could they part with such cool stuff? :)

What a bonus to come up with what you were searching for. I have always loved to read, with not as much time when I was a kid, except for what was needed to read for school. I did read and I even went to the library on a regular basis, but, it wasn't until I was an adult that I found I needed to read a bit every day or I felt cheated.

It is usually at night, when all is winding down. Then, I can slip into my fantasy world of reading. Thank you for being part of #MarketFriday!

#MarketFriday began as a way to reach out across the globe and learn about different cultures through their markets, especially local markets and farmers markets and eventually branching out and evolving over time from straight shopping to a cultural affair as it highlights how we differ and then again, how much we are alike. We have become a melting pot of culture, but, it is still the Rituals, Festivals, food, architecture, even your language/languages that separate us... Along with the fact of what is these things are normal for us. There are unwritten rules that rule our social behaviors. I see this as allowing for increased tolerance between cultures and nations, and opportunities to come together on an even playing ground. A strong culture can be beneficial to a country as it promotes unity, especially during a crisis, peaceful debate, and open dialogue. I have learned so much about all of you and it has been an amazing experience. I can only hope that learning about each other can help us work together for a peaceful world.

Fridays are all about the #MarketFriday Challenge! Looking to take part in it? Here is how:

Rules of the Road to Join #MarketFriday!

  1. Go to the market, or anywhere that you pay money for a service.
    Take pictures! Be creative!
  2. Tell us a little bit about the market or the event. What brought you there? What did you buy? How much did it cost?
  3. Post the picture(s) Of course, you should tell a little bit about the ones you post
  4. Use the MarketFriday Community Platform to post #hive-196308 (this is not required, but appreciated)
    5. Drop the link into the MarketFriday comment section so I can find it
  5. Following me and reblogging the post so more see it would be appreciated !! Not a rule, just appreciated, more vision for more views on your posts!
    7. You must put #MarketFriday by @dswigle somewhere on your post. If you don't and someone reads it, there is nothing to tie #MarketFriday to that post.
  6. Please only one post each week. Believe it not, I run out of voting power if you put in many more than that.

As always, please remember! #MarketFriday loves you!

Sifting through peoples discards always fascinated me, how could they part with such cool stuff?

I know, it's crazy! Not everything being tossed from one person's life is suitable for another's but I'll always give books and LPs a look over to see if there is anything worth picking up. I don't go to flea markets or boot markets often anymore... a few times a year perhaps... usually in the summer for a nice stroll 😊 I thoroughly enjoyed this little trip down memory lane. Fortuitously I had just sorted through my old books a few days ago and I was busy rereading Jonathan, so this one was to hand. My LP was in my box with my other LPs and the plaque was given back to me a few months ago by my dad so it was on my bedside table. Use them or lose them right? 💖 Oh and I hear you on the need to read each day...fulfillment ❣️

That was a fun Market Friday post! I always enjoyed doing Market Fridays, but it is a challenge these days. Yet every so often I can come up with something. I like the creative way you approached it!

hey Paul, thank you for popping by to say hello :-) Yeah we don't have many markets available at the mo with it being winter so I thought I'd try a reminiscent one instead. Appreciate it. I did enjoy writing this post 😎I see the tag is open to broad interpretation so seems like one can write about a wide range of activities.
